Brake, no. Not very practical, as you would have to hold the thing in any given spot of its travel.

Bicycle shifter? They are all over the net. Do a search here, I know they are a common subject on JF & JU. Toughest part is finding an old bike shifter that is not the indexing type. The old friction type, that you can adjust the tension work the best.

Rubicon express sells a kit for about $80. But you can surely do it cheaper, I'm just going to use their kit as a "buyers guide" for parts.

I'm planning on setting one up before tioga this spring.

There was a thread on this recently....

I really liked the idea of the aviation throttle that was mentioned in that thread, so I bought one off ebay on Jan 14th the guy shipped it on the 15th, it went from Maine, to Massachuset, to Florida, to Washington State to Pa. Our USPS at it's best, I finally received it on Feb 1. The guy was real nice and apologized, I told him it wasn't his fault, I'd never leave bad feedback because someone else screwed up.
It is so nice and smooth. Can't wait to get it installed, I will try to mount it where the one I have now is, but space is tight there. And the new cable is so large. Maybe this weekend, the weather is supposed to get warmish.

Does anyone have a picture of how they mounted the throttle cable to the carb. I'm refering to a to a V6 with a 2 jet carb. My 71 didn't come with one and was wondering how it is done.

Here's a link to the other thread http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61770

I thought mounting it on the shifter was stupid. I planned on a dash mount. The "snout" on the vernier is so long that it wouldn't fit within the dash depth (without drilling a big hole in the firewall). I consulted the Binder board and they raved about having it on the shifter. Left with next to no options, I made a mount for the shifter ... turned out to be the BEST THING EVER !!! Highly recommended mounting location ... looks pretty cool too :)

The Rubicon Express throttle is $29.95 not $80. Works great. It's basically just a bicycle shifter.

Okay I can't stand it any longer, here comes the dumb question. Why a hand throttle? PTO Speed ?

I use mine for several reasons. The main one is winching, I have a hydraulic winch and need an engine speed between 1500 and 2k while winching, for best results. Another is when I start the engine on a cold morning I like to keep the rpm's around 1000 until things warm up. ( I have the choke disabled)

And, don't tell anyone, but when traveling cross country I use it as a cruise control

My main use would be for winching. Running the RPM up a bit really helps the alternator keep up..

Besides the above, I use mine to boost the rpm's when running the compressor to fill up my tires. I also have a Vernier type hand throttle under the hood for the welder.

I have one just like the RE one (it started its life as a bike shifter) mounted on the shifter. Works great. I use if most often on cold mornings to kick my idle up .

I put an eye bolt on the end of the carb arm. ran the linkage thru, and put a cable stop on the end
Added a bolt and washer to hold the cable housing onto the accelerator cable bracket.

This is a V8 of course, but something similar should be doable on the V6.
