This web site will actually break out what each of the digits represents for CJ 1962 to 1971.
    Hope that helps also.

The 8th thru the 13th digit represents the sequential serial number.

Hmmmm, your right that the tech library here and the site you mention have the same data. I wonder why it doesn't match the records from the CJ3B page? We've normally assumed the data from the CJ3B page was very accurate as it came from company records.

(I edited my last post to show the links to the CJ3B pages)

Dang cut and paste mistake. Pilot error again!

    Should be fixed now.

From that document, your's would have been built March of 1965 making it a 1965 model year Tux.

Have not seen this Page before today. Found it through the search.
    Very interesting !

I looked over two original unmolested CJ-5's in the past few months.
I'll add some info.......... heres what I definately recall of them.

The first was a low mileage (about 35,000 )
Sign in window called it a 1968.
I don't currently have the serial plate number but it definately checked out as a mid year 1968.
It was powered by an original looking Dauntless with an emissions air pump,
and having the original oil bath cleaner. (I thought emissions pump unusual)
It had an original Meyers full cab. Has original white paint on cab.
The jeep itself has original blue paint. No rust holes, no dents
Even has original Hall 701 taillights.
Model 27 front having 3.73 as you would expect
    Bottom mounted wipers.
    Tapered rear axle
    Underseat fuel tank.
    Original seats in black upolstery.
    Passenger seat folds foreward.
    Original rear bench seat.
Of course it has a single lever TC
No snorkel cut out in the hood
Has T-14 with original long cable for clutch control. (I thought that unusual)
Ask me more I might recall.

Just the other day I looked over a purported 1966 CJ-5.
    Fair condition and mostly unmolested.
    Serial plate number is 8305-198965
Another D-225 with original oil bath cleaner. No emissions pump.
This 66 has snorkel cutout and has windshield safety latch on hood.
    Top mounted wipers.
    No marker lights or reflectors.
    Original tailights are gone.
Has T-86AA ( broken gears) with clutch control tube.
Single lever TC as it should be.
Has 5 leaves on the original good condition rear springs. (correct in my mind)
    Original red paint
    Top mounted wipers.
    Outside RVM was molested.
    Thats about all I recall.

Can anyone verify timelines for windshield mounting of the rear view mirror ?
Also when did flush mount tailights begin ?
    Electric vs Vac WW ?
    What about windshield safety latches?

I find it very interesting to note the number of leaves in original spring packs.

    Zoomer,
Have you made any revisions to the "lost years" table for this thread? I have a second 1970 CJ-5 that I'll get documented this weekend...

I haven't been making updates lately but really need to. I need to get with it and update for the Tuxedo Park models too. $ Sink and I are always collecting data whenever we can and will use it when I finally get around to updating the document. If you can provide data on another one for us, I'd appreciate if you could either post it here or send it to $ Sink and I.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Love this resource!

Hi all. I'm new to the site. What a great site and this is a great VIN resource. Two days ago I purchased what I thought (until 5 mins ago) was a 1967 CJ5. The VIN # is 8305 219332. From this resource, I see that it is actually a '66 built in August of that year! Awesome.

Question: why doesn't my CJ5 have a Body Style/Special Model Code? Also, supposedly for a 10 digit VIN like I have the serial number is supposed to be 5 digits. Mine has 6. Why is that?

Thanks for your help and I look forward to many more posts as I rebuild this beautiful CJ5!

    Mike

Re: !! See this thread for VIN questions !!

    Welcome.

August 1966 build date likely makes your Jeep a 1967 model year vehicle, especially since your's is late August. That's about the time the manufacturers do the model year switch.

I'll have to check the document in regards to the 10 digit VIN, it's possible the document is incorrect.

Re: !! See this thread for VIN questions !!

Thanks, Mark. I didn't even think of that. Good to know everything is correct then. I thought of this after I posted. Is the fact that my VIN is 6 digits simply because it is sequential and once they hit 100k the number went to 6 digits? No, right, because in that case the VINs would go up to 600k+ for the CJ5s.

I look forward to hearing what you find out.
