I have a dauntless in my 71 5, and need some help. My engine was burning oil realbad, so i replaced the cam (due to the front lobe being worn round, no lobe at all) did avalve job, and reassembled. Now it smokes even worse was just out off the pass. side, now both. So im thinking new rings, my question is will i need to get 20 over rings and have my cylinders machined or can i put standard rings back in with out a problem.

*this was poorly written but i tried.*

the only way to know for sure is to tear down and measure the pistons and cylinder bore diameter.

Yep, measure. The cylinder bores will wear most at the top, so they will have "taper." The more wear, the more taper. Taper is repaired by boring the cylinders oversize and fitting new pistons. New pistons are expensive.

You can always put the original pistons back in with new rings. However, if the taper is excessive, the new rings will flex too much as the pistons move, and they will wear out quickly from fatigue.

Oil burning could be the rings or the valve guides. Have done a compression check?

You might pull the spark plugs out and soak the pistons (and Rings) in WD-40 for a fews days. This is on the outside chance that the rings could be stuck in the piston groves. WD-40 or a diesel solution could free stuck rings and help stop smoking and blow-by. After soaking the cylinders, crank the engine with the spark plugs removed to blow out the WD-40/Diesel solution. Then reinstall and run the engine. At first it will smoke as it burns out all the WD-40-- but afterwards could (maybe) help the problem. Otherwise you will have to rebuild the engine-- bore and new pistons and rings-- and all that jazz.

I would not assume anything before I had measured the compression. Have you measured the compression, wet and dry?
