More Power from an F-Head

    I've been tempted more than once to try a turbo on the old flathead, but I'm really afraid of running into cooling issues. Flatheads were never known for their excellent cooling systems... :rofl:

    extreme4x4 just ran a section of show on the Jeep class of swampbuggy raceing. Not sure how they did it but the guy was claiming 150hp out of an F-head spinning 7200 RPM :shock: So apparently it can be done. And yeh I was thinking if I ever get to do a turbo that I would do a turbo for a honda 1.8L motor. Small turbo should spin up quick.

    Tim & Steve.....I will see if I can take a couple of pictures of the turbo's on the engines with a ruler next to them and maybe that will help to see if these are viable options. I do not plan to build or run an F head anytime soon but I think it is a neat idea.

    I actually have a crazy offset cone on it now. The other one is a baby 4" I think on a cheap aftermarket chrome base and lid. I had the cone rolling around my van and tried it on the stock elbow. lil modification and it werkz! :D

    i saw that show. It had a 4 barrel carb adapted to it. im suprised it ran at all with all that fuel R)

    Jp did an article on those crazy sippy hole jeeps a couple of years back. showed some good pics. sheetmetal intakes, 4 barrels, crank triggered msd ign., hydro. linkages, waterproofing. iirc, someone on here wrote it. maybe, they got some secrets they could share. ;)

    You state that you had the cam timing advanced, I'd read this before in one of the racing mags.
    How much did you have it advanced? I know it can't be more that a degree or two. Or a tooth or two with either the chain-drive or direct-drive cams.:?

    a degree or two is correct, a tooth would be too much, not saying it wouldnt run, i have seen that happen once, from the factory, on a tractor, was always hard to start, we did this on a sbc, and its actually works backward to what you would think, retard it a degree or two and all kinds of top end, advance it and all kinds of bottom end, not sure how you would do this on a F head, our cam gear was special it had a ecenrric in it and that was how you set it

    You normally use a special timing gear that has the indexing hole or the keyway cut in such a manner as to produce the desired cam timing. For common engines (mostly V-8 applications) there are aftermarket timing chain/gear sets that allow you to adjust the cam/crank timing, but these are really limited. For an L-head or an F-head this would almost certainly have to be a custom, one-off timing gear set.

    After looking back at this post and after doing the engine rebuild the jeep is cool in a way all its own. You dont need any more power in them, lifted and 33's maybe but all by themselfs they are way sweeter than a huge cj7.

    No argument really. But, a good flowing exhaust (~2"), a masterfully built Carter carb or a Weeber, an MSD 6 box or Pertronix and an extra 3°+ of initial spark makes a BIG difference. At some convenient and economical point in time, I am confident that a milled head and a Clifford type cam grind would really be appreciable gains for me. :)

    one of the tricks the old hot rodders used to do when changing cam timing with a stock gearset is to take the key (of the cam gear) and cut a sliver off of it and move that sliver over to the other side, which in effect degrees the cam. we've done this a few times on older hot rod motors at our shop with good results.
