I'm putting a 2a together from a pile of parts. It turns out the flywheel and bellhousing I'm using requires the old mechanical starter with the small gear(which I have). The problem is, I don't have any of the linkage to activate the starter. I can fabricate parts to some extend, but I haven't been able to find any pictures of the linkage.

Does anyone have pics of the starter linkage?

Is there an aftermarket starter I could use instead of the stock mechanical one?

you sure your starter has the foot start which engages the gear and starts the motor?
You could have a bendix starter which just has a post on top to supply power. I don't know my starters well though

sounds like he has the foot starter with linkage, no pictures but i know exactaly what you have if you have that setup, i had in on my 47 willys pickup, didnt like it much either, if the contact points engaged before the bendix teeth you grinded the gears, and the only adjustment was by moving the contact points, a real pita, if it were me i would go with the f head flywheel and the toyota land cruiser starter, search the fourm and you will find it:)

only way as far as i know to be sure what flywheel you have is to count the teeth, from what i gather you have the 97 tooth flywheel, but dont take my word for it, count them. the willys starter you have requires the bell housing to match, should have a hole in it for the end of the starter shaft to fit in. you say you have a pile of parts, if you have the f head flywheel, bell housing and plate that goes between them, you can do the conversion much cheaper than what the new starter is listed for, search the early cj5 fourm, sombody over in the cj5 tech section did this a while back for something like $60 for the starter

Here's the link to the Toyota starter thread for future reference.

I was under the impression that a flywheel from an F motor wouldn't work on my L due some tapered dowels on the crank not matching the flywheel. I'll have to take another look.

Why not just wire up a sylenoid and a start button like the later style. I think you can just remove that mechanism and there is another terminal right on the starter

you may be able to do that, its been 20 years since i fooled with one of these, it does have a terminal under the cap, but i cant rember if the linkage engages the teeth or if it has the later style bendix

That will not work.. The starter you have is a 3a starter. Here's a link that might help you.
    http://www.cj-3a.com/Starters&Ringgears.htm
The linkage is nothing more than a bent rod with a flat round piece welded on top for your foot.
You could always just swap in a 2a flywheel and starter then use a key switch.

That is the same starter I have. Its the Late 3a version. I'd say it is the worst one to have. The stars have to be perfectly lined up for it to work right. The motor is great but the rest sucks.

You guys are awesome, and correct. After counting the teeth six times(because everything is put together), it turns out to be 124 teeth, the 3a setup. My pile of spare parts contains a bellhousing, flywheel, backing plate, and starter for a 2a. Looks like I'll switching to the 2a setup.

Good choice. I had to find a NOS gear drive for mine and paid dearly for it. If I ever have another excuse to pull the motor and trans apart, Everything will change so that I can use a switch and a button on the dash.

Good move IMHO, the 3A setup seems simple, but it can be problematic.

I've run the '2A setup with a Ford-type solenoid on the fenderwell for years with no issue, even with a 6v starter running on 12v. I just keep that in mind and don't crank for long periods of time.
