CJ2A VIN location

Good Morning!
Well before my accident, I remember asking a question somewhere about where VINs were placed other than on the dash plate or engine compartment VIN plate. Is there another place where the VIN would be stamped on a CJ2A?

They didn't really have a VIN like the modern vehicles have. There was a body plate on the firewall under the hood that would have a body number on it. There is also frame tag on the frame rail near the front bumper on driver's side. The body numbers and frame numbers don't always match up. I'm sure others will chime in with more/better info.

 

The only other place I know of is a small (1 1/2 X 2 inch) plate that was riveted to the front driver side frame horn. It should be about 8 inches behind the front bumper on the drivers side. As long as the front end of the frame has remained unmolested, it should be there.

The other numbers that would be on it is the ACM number on the tub. That number is stamped into the steel on front edge of the gusset that runs from the frame to the firewall, drivers side. The numbers are about 1/2" tall. This number is <typically> about 10,000 lower than the VIN number. That is because Willys started at 10,001 and the ACM number (the company that made the tubs) started at number 1. This number is also stamped into the tailgate and should match as long as no one swaped the tailgate.
