Brake fittings- Locktite?

So after the CJ sitting in my garage for the past 5 months I finely got to running new brake lines. I got a double res. MC kit from Herm and a proportioning valve from the junk yard. I was worried about this job being over my head but it turned out pretty good. I did waste 4 or 5 lines making bends wrong but I just did it slowly and it was lots easyer than I thought. A couple hours Friday night and four more Saturday - Done!

I need just to tighten it all up now. The question is, should I use teflon tape on the threads or Locktite or is there somthing special for brake fittings?

 

No sealant!

The flare fittings seal by crushing the flare between the seat and the nut. Adding sealant will, at best, do nothing for you, and at worst make the fittings impossible to remove or leak.

 

I actually used "anti-sieze" on mine.......

 

Maybe that's ok, but be double dang sure to keep it away from the sealing surfaces. Anti-seize has a filler in it (mica?) that could make your joints leak or get into the fluid. Regardless, these joints are supposed to be clean clean clean - you don't want anything getting into the brake fluid.

 

I will echo what timgr has said, he is correct you can't get brake connections or components too clean. Brake fluid is glycol based and all rubber seals that are made to resist glycol based fluids react badly with petroleum and silicon based compounds. I do use anti seize but I am very very careful and keep it away from any sealing areas or the fluid.

Use a flare nut wrench to snug them up. Available at Sears, Napa or such.
