I need to replace the rear seal on my transfer case. It is on a 1969 CJ5 with the 4 bolt hub. I think the transfer case is a Dana 18 but I'm not sure. I took the four nuts of and moved the u joint driveshaft. I took off the big nut on the shaft but nothing else seems to be ready to come loose. I'm hesitant to pry too hard. I'm not planning on replacing the brake as I use a line lock and this is just a trail rig.
Should the plate on the four bolts pry off? All suggestions welcome!

IIRC - the brake drum and backing plate will have to come off to access the seal. It is sometimes a pain to get the drum off if it has been on there for 40 years. I used a three leg bearing puller and cranked for ever.

Thanks Russ. I googled it and found an idea that worked. It suggested using an air chisel with a blunt punch. I followed their suggestion of prying on the drum while using the air punch into center of shaft. As per the suggestion the hub just slowley walked off the shaft.
I felt a little dumb though as I hadn't drained the gear oil and it drained out as the hub came out. Made a mess.

My seal no longer leaks. I wanted to pass along what I learned in case others have a similar issue. As I was talking to Herm ordering the seal he suggested I be sure and clean the vent on the T/C case. He told me pressure can build in the case if the vent is plugged and push out gear oil. The vent was plugged and I'm not sure if that or a bad seal was the problem but I no longer have a leaky seal.

I just soaked it in solvent and blew it out with air. I heard it go "pop" as the plug cleared. It is all metal, very basic.

did you remove the felt seal all together or leave it in and just replace the rubber part with new?
