OK, i'm beginning to feel a bit stupid on this one. The motor is running and now on to the electrical.

I have a 37 amp motorola alternator. It has been to the alternator shop and has been tested, they said it was fine. O-reilly part 01-0170.

I have a voltage regulator Borg-Warner R289. It is new, has only been installed for my testing.

I have connected and reconnected both pieces and am not getting any charging as near as i can tell. I have a voltmeter hooked up to the same aux terminal that the red wire of the voltage reguator connects to. The main goes to the battery(i couldn't tell any difference going to the terminal on the starter or to the battery.) One of the two grounding lugs goes to the black on the voltage regulator. The field goes to the green on the voltage regulator. The regulator case (currently mounted to board across frame) is grounded back to the negative on the battery.

Anybody got any clue what else to look for? Is it possible to test a voltage regulator?

I was looking at the Delco SI 100 amp alternator, but it is another $100 and what i've got should work (in theory.)

    Thanks for any suggestions. MRW

I would recommend that you get a AC Delco Alt. It simplifies your charging system with an internal regulator.

Was the motor off idle speed? Some of the alt's don't charge until you get the rpm's up a bit.

mine does that on occasion delco 130si. The 130si is slightly smaller and withstands higher underhood temps then the 10/12si. the only downside is you have to buyone sans core.

I have the small CS 130 105 amp to install as soon as I can set up the bracket for it. Charges around 60 amps off idle. Ran it in another truck that ran dual electric fans and it kept them running and the system charged. It is real close to the SI series from ear to ear and fit the same bracket.

MRW, You are correct this is fixable. The regulator can be tested by any good alternator shop. Bring your alternator along with your regulator as well as a hand written wiring diagram telling them what wires are connected to what. I suspect that either you have the wires connected wrong, or that there is a break in one of them. The suggestion about checking this at a fairly high idle is a good one. One of my jeeps needed to be above idle to start charging. Once it was charging, it would charge at idle all day. Good luck, I hope this helps, Matt W.

I was doing homework today and read about the idle speed, hadn't even thought of that. I've got the radiator off at this point and the fuel disconnected, but i'm going to put my buffing wheel on my drill and use that to spin the pully to see what happens. Nothing like a little invention, no? If that doesn't work, i'll either go to the alt shop with my voltage regulator and alternator again, or just suck it up and e-bay a Delco SI10. Where do you hook up a voltmeter if you use one of those? I looked at a few of them online and never figured that part out.

COOL. Never mind some of my questions in that last post of mine. If the drill spinning trick doesn't work, i'm just doing the nappa conversion that Jayhawkclint suggested. Thanks a million for the info, that solves a bunch of my problems. Gotta love this forum.

Drats and double drats, foiled again. My drill is 2500 rpm and i've got a 6" polishing pad on it, so i certainly had the RPMs, but alas no love. I think i'm going to chuck it in and do the Delco thing. Anybody want a slightly used, non working 35 amp setup? Haha ;)

Thanks again for the help, MRW
