alrite.. guys ive come to ask the experts.. b4 i get ne farther into this project.
Buddy just picked up a 1974 i belive CJ5.. body is decent... needs work.. must of been a mud runner before. he picked it up for dirt cheap... under $500

well, it was missing the coil when he got it. so woulndt run.. wired in a coil quick.. and no spark.. coil tests good..

after runnin the block numbers, it came to a 67-74 225 odd fire

pulled the cap off.. and its pretty nasty under there. bare wires and such..

so it needs, a Cap, Rotor, Points,. what else is underthere? i know basic auto stuff.. replaced alot of this before.. but this whole motor confusing me..

went to the parts store today to get the parts.. and welll. there is two or three differnt caps/rotors/points.. how do i tell which one it is?

also is there ne thing else i need to know when i put it all back together?

also ne thing else in general i need to do? the wiring is a mess. so going to start elimiting most of it... its just gonna b a farm runner for now, so gonna put in toggle switch for coil power and a push button starter.. ne thing i need to know bout as to hookin up the alternator.. its got a motorola one on it.. and has this box on the frame.. my guess is a regualor... idk this this has got me confused.

The 225 V6 started ended with the 1971 model year in Jeeps. Your numbers don't make sense. If it's a '74, it would have come with a 232 or 258 inline 6, or a 304 V8.

    ok

I was told that is it a 74. im not sure.

but the block number is 1358435 which comes back to a 67-74 225ci 3.7l V6 Oddfire Kaiser Jeep Corp. Amc

so i know what the motor is.

all i need to know is how do i tell which ignition system it is. wheter it is prestolite, or delco-remey or what.

if any one has any pictures and part numbers or tell me were to look for part numbers on the distributor that is in there. would b appreciated. i can try to get picutres but the jeep is 20 miles away.

Delco has the window on the side of the cap to adjust the points.

    Prestolite does not.

I wouldnt worry about that Motorola alt and reg right now. Just leave all wires off till you get er runnin. Be sure you have that ballast resistor wired to the pos term on coil, and other end of bassast resistor to ign or batt +.

Take the old cap, points and condensor with you. I'd replace the sparkplugs and possibly the wires at the same time too.

Ballast resistor is on the firewall. It's a ceramic piece with electrical wire running in and out the other side. It's about 3" long I'd reckon.

Condenser is not part of the points. It's a seperate item, but also located in the distributor.

Size of the window? Why? It's not an issue of size, it's there or it's not. :)

only one size window BUT the location matters, as the inline 6's and the v6's same the same cap. the inline's window is centered between the plug connectors and the v6 is on the connector. either will work, but unless the window is offset, you'll have to pull the cap off to adjust the dwell which isn't good as the motor won't be running.

True enough, but for the purposes of IDing the distributor to Delco or Prestolite I'm not sure it's useful. ;)

if you have the delco starter, it has a post that would send 12v to the coil to aid in starting. and no, unless you like changng points as they burn out fast with 12v.

With a Delco starter, on the solenoid there is two small terminals. one terminal "S" will go to the ign switch for start. The other terminal "R" needs a wire that goes to the + term of coil. This aids in supplying 12volts to coil during crank only. Makes for easier starting.
