I'm a newbie here and new to the older jeeps and I just have a quick question for the experianced crowd. Oh and I'm glad to find this site and to see so many other people have and use older jeeps still. My question is I need a matser cylinder for my brakes and $130 is kinda high, so I was wondering if I could use one of a DJ5 from the same years? they are only $60 dollars at the site I found them. Any help would be great and many thanks in advance. I have a 69 CJ-5 with the Buick 225 V-6 and I love it , so much fun, But it needs brakes.

Duh "Flaps" I get it now and Thanks from Arkansas. No I really aint cause the local AutoZ wanted more than I have found one for online and I figured if the DJ5's were close enough to the CJ's then I would use one of them and spend some of the left over money elsewhere on the old girl cause It aint bein drove in over a year and with summer coming I would love to get it up and running again.

You could just rebuild the one you have...rebuild kits are (IIRC) less than $20, and all you really need to get them apart is a pair of snap ring pliers. I always just rebuild the one that's already there unless the bore is pitted. Check with your local parts store...the ones around here usually have the kits in stock unless it's something really weird (and even then they can usually order it).

Thanks everyone but the problem with rebuilding "the one I have" is the fact that I dont even have one. I guess I'll just keep this going and maybe I'll try and see if the DJ-5's will work so that anyone else with the same question will know where to look for a cheaper replacement. Quick question does the DJ's mount one the firewall or under the floor boards?

A '69 should have the dual MC from the factory.

RockAuto.com has the factory replacement for ~39 bux, Dorman PN M56193.

I'm not sure why they still show the single MC for 67-71 Jeeps, unles the export models still had that setup. The Feds mandated the dual MC in the US starting in '68 IIRC.

If you can swing it the higer price, I'd suggest a new cylinder instead of a reman. A good rebuilder will sleeve the MC bore, and that should be as good as new, but I've had much better luck with new brake parts. Reman/rebuilt brake parts don't last very long IME.

Agreed, Rock Auto seems to have the best prices, if they stock your part.

Thanks everyone "grannyscj" I have one of the autoz specials on order and "66cj" I agree about the brakes I was just trying to get some input as to wether or not the dj master cylinder would be the same or really close and "w3srl" yes the 69 did have the dual res MC but before I got this jeep from a buddy he put it on his other jeep when his quit, but I got it for a really goood deal so I couldn't pass it up"traded a blown up Ford B2" and the motor was about a year old after the rebuild, but it's got some of the usual rot around the rear of the frame, so the tub is coming off this spring and the frame is getting a going over along with the brakes and suspension. I'll try and get some pics of it up in the next couple of days

Thanx everyone this is the quickest I've ever gotten anything online and like I said the jeep is getting a going thru before it is getting put on the road and it may not be ready for summer but it wil be ready for next winter, and the same buddy has a 68 for sell with the V-6 and is in alot better shape for $1200 , but he keeps sayin it is a M38A1 but when I look it over it is just a CJ-5 so is this a good deal?

This is a separate question, I think :?
