what to coat inside of hard top with

    The metal hard top on my 70 cj has aged insulation on the inside, but nothing covering it, so everytime you touch it it snows insulation. What can I coat the inside of the hard top with to seal the insulation and make the inside of the jeep look better.

    Didn't come with any insulation from the factory. I'd scrape it off. Nothing's going to stick to it if it's falling apart.

    Mine has a liner of sorts, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what the stuff is. Almost looks like felt matting. Since Tim said it wasn't factory I looked just now, and it does seem to have been cut to fit and is just stiff enough to stay up there without much help. If the PO happens to be on day shift this week, I'll try to connect with him and see what he says. I imagine most anything would help with some heat retention and noise reduction.

    Probably just clean it all off and take it to a headliner shop, they can porbably put a universal one in easy enough. Would be easier for them if you just removed th ehard top and brought it to them, they wouldnt have to go in the jeep to even do it.

    I've been thinking of useing one of the yj/tj soft top insulator kits for a liner on mine.

    If you want good insulation you could use some of the expandable foam insulation and install the headliner below that...

    Mine originally had a sheet of some kind of fiber board against the roof held in place by simply resting on the channels around the top interior. I took mine out and glued some nice grey carpet to the inside, including the interior sides. A couple of the pieces have started to fall off and now I have glue stuck to the hardtop. It was nice while it lasted, but I don't know if I'd recommend my solution.

    Take the top off and pressure wash the old insulation off, you really don't want to breath any of the dust when you drive it. The street rod guys are using something called lizard skin. Sound deadner and thermal insulator in one coating. It is kind of expensive.
