Does anyone know what vehicle utilized an AMC 258 /T18/D20 with the starter located on the driver side diagonally opposite the CJ location?

It seems to me that they put the starter on the drivers side when that engine was put in cars, like the Hornet, or maybe Pacer.
I am sure "Timgr" would know.

RHD application might. If you move the clutch linkage to the opposite side with a different bellhousing, it would make sense to move the starter too.

I don't know of any domestic Jeep application that did. The T-18 never appeared in a passenger car.

I went to see this setup. The clutch is still on the same side and it was a 258/T-18/D20. with the Jeep truck D20 shifter. 1 barrel carb but the starter was on the drivers side.
The stickout is the same as an early 70's CJ. 7/8 adapter and all. The most unusual thing is that 1st appears to be 6:1 rather than the 4:1 one might expect from this era. Reverse is up by 3rd
I'll get more info and post it.

Might be a 232 J-truck, pre-70. This engine is different from the later 232 and 258 in deck height and bell pattern.

The 258 was not produced until mid-year 1970. At this time, all the AMC engines were unified to the same bell pattern - 232, 258, 304, 360, 401. Pretty sure all of these since then have the starter on the right in Jeep applications.

The 232 in the pick-ups had the starter on the passenger side.

Was it the Eagle that had the starter on the wrong side?

Could be an Eagle... Wikipedia says the 1981 Eagle got a 4-speed, but they were 151s. No passenger car ever got the T-18 AFAIK. Too heavy, and too hard to shift. Plus, the over-and-up T-18s were gone by the '80s.

That makes sense. The owner is probably confused about the engine size although he did mention that a later AMC head he had tried to use was not the same as the one that was on the engine.
The bearing retainer looks different from the CJ version of the T-18. I'm going to buy it and play around. The 7/8 adapter looks to have the same bolt pattern to the bell housing as my CJ just the bore in the adapter is smaller.

The engine and tranny do not have to be out of the same vehicle. Probably a car engine and a truck/jeep transmission.
