Well, it tooks some time, but I managed to get the clutch issues worked out. The previous owner had used the throwout bearing carrier from some other vehicle, and it definitely wasn't working well after the rebuild. I don't remember what the bearing I took off looked like, but the new one was way to thin for that carrier. So I got a replacement, got the linkage, clutch fork, throwout bearing and return spring in, some other things squared away and took it out for the first time without incident since last August.

Here's a pic from it's first trip out with Dad.

And I'm thrilled with the ride of the Rancho 1" springs and the shocks from Walck's. It's much better than I expected.

I posted a WTB thread, but if anyone can shoot me a PM if you have a functioning 0-9 12V speedo you're looking to move, I'd appreciate it. Mine had some sort of major failure, so I need a replacement. Other than that, the directionals still come on but don't flash, but that's it. Everything else seems to be going pretty well.

    I'm 100% jealous.
No lies at all, I wish I had that sort of time/funds/SKILL.
    Very nice paint job too

Thanks everyone. It's been inspected and it's all I've driven all week. So far it's been doing great. I should spend some time this weekend going around and tightening all the bolts to make sure nothing has worked itself loose. But I couldn't be happier. I do kind of miss the side-mounted spare, but I definitely feel better about not having all the weight of a 31x10.5 BFG MT/KM hanging on the sheetmetal any more. And it's doing quite well mounted flat in the back. I'll be hand-painting the JEEP, WILLYS and I have a 4WD stencil, but I've been so busy at work I haven't had a chance to even think about when I'm going to do it.

    Sammy,
I had never done anything more than change fluids before this project. The early 5 is a great vehicle to start on because it's about as straight-forward as you're ever going to find. If I had more time, I could've save a bunch of money and reconditioned a lot of things I just outright replaced. But a lack of experience and time kind of forced my hand to just buy new. I did blow my budget, but that tends to happen. But it really is a managable project. In my opinion, the keys are to label everything, take your time, label everything, take lots of pictures and label everything. Did I mention to be sure to label everything?

The white outline of Willys on the tailgate with 4wd below it was always beautiful.

Thanks :) How much did you end up spending in the end? What tire size is that on there? It's got a perfect stance on it. I'm actually going moday to look at a partially disassembled 47 flattie, but...I'm afraid after it's back together my dad's gonna take it so I'll still look for a 5, a 7, or a full size Cherokee Chief.

Beautiful Jeep. You nailed rattle can stuff.

Your 5 looks awesome! The tires and springs you’re running give it a great stance. I’m equally impressed with how quickly you got it completed. I've been working on a transmission/transfercase rebuild for about 4 months but I’m in the home stretch so hopefully I will have my 5 on the road soon as well.

Also, If there is a NE get together put me on this list (hopefully my CJ5 will be done by then).

    Thanks!

Unfortunately the JEEP is off the road right now. I can't figure out what's wrong, and need to take a step back because throwing parts at it doesn't make any sense considering almost everything's new!

    The story...
I was low on coolant last Saturday... I think there were some air pockets in the cooling system, so once things got circulating, it was low and was running hot. I went to top it off, thinking it had cooled down enough, but it hadn't and a geyser of coolant shot up and soaked most things under the hood. I cleaned it up as best I could, topped off the coolant, and it fired right up. Drove quite a bit Saturday night without incident. Sunday morning it was hard to start first thing. Later in the morning it was even harder, and then early Sunday afternoon it wouldn't start at all. It turns over fine, but doesn't fire. I pull the cap and the inside of the distributer is dry. The ends of the spark wires look dry at the block, and there's nothing obvious.
So I have a local mechanic take a look at it... A few things had loosened up during it's first week on the road, but nothing that could really cause the issues I'm having. Everything's tightened up, and he starts to trouble-shoot. He finds power at the coil, but nothing beyond, and thinks it might be a bad coil. So I order one, it arrives today, I install it and no change. Still turns over fine, and no spark.
So what else could it be? Could coolant have worked in through the threads of the plugs and been enough to foul the plugs? I'm pulling the plugs first thing tomorrow. Is there anything else I should check?

what shape is your coil wire in? points sticking, or stuck? check the cap and rotor?
You might try posting this ? over on the early tech forum as well...
    Good luck, Jim S.

This is what's throwing me for a loop... Everything's new. The only thing in the engine compartment that didn't get touched was the engine, though it does have a new water pump and thermostat) and the alternator. Everything else, including plugs, wires, coil, distributer/cap/rotor and the wiring harness are all new. It fired right up the first time in 10 months after putting everything together a few weeks ago... Just took a little starting fluid. And the mechanic checked to make sure that things looked fine with the cap off... As it turned over, everything was moving and making contact as it should. And nothing else seems obvious. I'll probably post in tech once I check the plugs.
    Thanks.

I don't have a lot of points experience, but if they were not set correctly could they have become corroded, and be closing but not contacting??

Well, they finally had a chance to track down the problem, and it turns out it was the condenser. So the JEEP was up and running... Well, for about 10 minutes.

Tried taking it out because the two weeks of trying to start it had pretty much bled the battery dry. I got about a half mile away and aparantly one of the clips holding the harness away from the engine as it comes through the firewall let go. The main section of the harness slid forward and it got up against the manifold. That burned right through the insulation, and then the main ignition wire grounded out. The whole harness went up, with 4-6" flames along the whole stretch from the solenoid up behind the engine, through the firewall and under the dash to the ignition switch. The main 12V wire was glowing red. I was lucky I didn't lose the whole thing and only got a small burn on my foot from where insulation dripped down.

Now that I look back on it, things could've been much worse. A fire extinguisher was on my list of things to pick up, but thankfully once the wiring was off the manifold and wasn't getting additional heat, it went out pretty quickly, so I was very lucky. I'll be able to keep the tail light wiring and the head light/parking light wiring (from the terminal block forward) in place, and my Spartan turn signal switch didn't get damaged, so I'll just have to redo the main ignition/engine/dash section of the harness. And that really limits how much work there is to do. So I'm guessing it'll end up being a $210/4-6 hour lesson in how not to secure wiring in the engine compartment. Now it's just the frustration of knowing it's going to sit for another 2 weeks before I can get to it.

So, less of the day? Make sure your harness is very secure in the engine compartment.

    Could've been a lot worse.

Your JEEP is looking really nice. It is "just right." I wish I had one built like that; you've inspired me to track down a '55-'64 model.

    Thanks everyone.

The new harness arrived yesterday, along with a speedo. So I'll be pecking away at rewiring this over the next week or so. With any luck, nothing beyond the harness was damaged and I'll be up and running soon.

I ended up tracking down some nice metal wire clamps with rubber surfaces from a FLAPS. I started around 9:30 by capping off the generator and regulator wires with heatshrink, reterminating a few to work with some of my accessories, and then got to wiring. I laid it out right next to the old one, and as I disconnected a wire from the old harness, I hooked the new one up in its place. It really is amazing how straight forward it is, and I'll say it again... Walck's harness is great. Anyway, I wrapped it up, cleaned up and got it running around 2:30. So it was a fairly short day, though I got a hell of a sunburn from doing all the work in the parking lot at my office. But it was definitely nice to have it on the road again... Even if there is an ominous sound coming from somewhere underneath.

The harness all ready to go:
