I just installed a new tank in my 71 CJ5 and read all the related threads. I have u'd a piece of hose to connect the two outlets that were once designed for a canister.

My question is on drilling the gas cap for venting. It currently has a small hole in it but it does not go completely through the cap, just the outside cover. Will this be enought to vent the tank? or does a hole need to be drilled completely through the entire cap?

Do you have the canister parts? I'd put those back if it were mine. Vapor recovery costs almost nothing in maintenance, nothing in performance, and vents your tank properly.

These tanks should be running vented caps. While I haven't purchased one in years, I'm pretty sure they are still available.

I havent been able to find the canister anywhere. I would put one on if I could.

Any other options? Do I drill all the way through the cap?

Unless it was a California model it wouldn't have a recovery canister.
It should run with a vented cap and yes they are still available. They are not drilled thru but have a vent thru the gasket and cap design.

I drilled one 1/8" hole all the way through.
Does the vented cap look like the chrome original cap............I guess actually the original should have been vented. My new cap isn't and I looked and couldn't find one.

Interestingly enough on a psuedo-related gas-cap venting point... Since I'm moving to Washington, in the Seattle area, I was checking out the emissions standards. Of course they are applicable to newer vehicles (old cars are exempt..)... one requirement was a sealed gas tank cap. They actually test them in a separate machine, apparently.

In Oregon, where it is illegal to pump your own gas (don't get me started...) and gas attendants sometimes can't figure out that the gas hole is a larger "old nozzle" style, rather than the newer style. and freak out.. An attendant once decided to keep mine, and I missed they had done so...(grumble)..

I unexpectedly found a nice chrome cap at a FLAPS, I just quoted year, make and model and they found a shiny one for me. Mine doesn't have any holes in it, and it doesn't seem to leak on hills either.
