Uh, what's your metric for "worth"?

Your list is shorter than mine has been...and it's all worth it on the first sunny day top down drive.

But if you're just looking for cheap transportation?

I didnt mean to compair lists. I am sure a lot fo members have done more work than this.

I guess it was a weak question. I just dont want to put a ton more money in it than it is worth on the market. But if me adding new parts means the value is going up, then I'll keep going. I know with some vehicles new parts dont really add any value.

Dont ever expect to get out what you put into your jeep. Look in the for sale section, especially at Lynn's jeep if its still there. There is no way these guys are asking for what they have into them.

If you are doing a cost benifit analysis, put down the wrench and walk away. 99.9% of us are here for the intangible fun of being Jeepers. Its a hobby, not an investment.

There are some jeeps that aren't worth saving, and there are some that are. Its all a matter of what its worth to you to have a nice old jeep. Wether its for sentimental reasons, or just plain lunacy, we all have different levels of attachment to our vehicles. that being said, most of us also have a cut off point where we will give up, and get a different vehicle. You have to decide where that is for you.

    Yeah,

You will never re coup the money spent on your Jeep. Just won't happen for the most part. Your list seems like a good one since all of those parts need to be functioning in order to cruise up and down the road. If you are looking to sell, I wouldn't put too much money into it before hand.

I don't mind putting $1500 or so into it. Especially since frame and body are good. I paid $1300. i just want it to run consistently and safely for my summer weekends.

value is relative and 1500 will go a long way if you do things yourself.

It won't ever be worth what you put into it in parts.
You have to love working on/having a jeep.

I bought mine for both, I need something to build/play with.
The payoff is intrinsic for me.

You should be able to get pretty far for $1500.
The tires could eat your lunch if you're not careful, but that all depends on size and type.

I replaced my exhaust with bolt on stock replacement parts from RockAuto.com, went right on for about $180 I think. I have a thread about it somewhere, not loud, just stock.

Just take it one paycheck at a time.

    Did I say that?
I meant one piece at a time.

Purely subjective...you're gonna have the answer that one for yourself. I'd venture to say your list isn't near complete once you get into it, but it's a good start. How bad do you want that particular Jeep like you want it? What are you willing to put up with and how much are you willing to spend and do? It's really ultimately up to you. It's doable...

Hmm. I'm about $12K into a $900 CJ. So I guess it all in how much you are willing to spend.

Also keep in mind, a lot of your list is stuff that would just be considered "routine maintenence" (brakes, hubs, tires, etc..) anyway. You'd probably have to do a lot of work on ANY car you buy for $1300. The Jeep is probably the easiest vehicle to work on for the DIY guy. I say keep it and put the money into it. Your Jeep has already depreciated as much as it ever will and will most likely only stay stable or increase in value. Cool old cars and Jeeps are always going to be just that, cool. You'll lose a lot less money over the long haul by putting your money into it. IMHO. Good luck!

I know a gent that has saved every receipt on his Jeep since the day he bought it new in 1970.
The receipts now fill two 30 gallon trash cans to the top.
    that's a lot of paper....

Looks like a good start to me. I've currently got about $8k into my '73 CJ5 and it's not drivable, or done, by a long shot. It all depends on what you want.

I in now way know enough about these jeeps to give you a an answer, I also have not owned my jeep long only about 3 or 4 weeks really. Mine was bought as a daily driver as well as a toy. In fact I am driving from New Orleans to Cali. in October and I am need of some fairly expensive fixes just for the smog checks. i.e. New stock Exhaust, carb, plugs and wires, distributor, and figger out where all those disconnected wires and hoses go lol. I think it is worth the time and money and it give me a break from the POS motors I work on in the Navy F-404-400. I am glad I ran across this jeep and have put at least 300 miles on it. With the top off and no doors you just can't beat the feeling you get. Even stuck in traffic you feel better about it. I say Do itenjoy the fruits of your labour and relish in the fact that you will more than likley never see a jeep quite like yours.

As far as I'm concerned, my Jeep will never be done. I've done a ton of work to it already, it's very driveable now, but I will continually be doing something to it. You can find a lot of good deals on ebay( but you have to be careful, also).
I think you have to have a vision of what you want in the end, and work towards that. Good luck!

Right there with ya buddy. Along with every other round headlight in this joint.

Jeeps are like women. You forget all the problems they cause you once the top is off.
