in the '75 CJ5 dash over the steering column?? It's a factory hole with the notch on the bottom between the HL swich and the Hazard switch. The PO had a push/pull switch for a set of fog lights mounted there. I have no plans for the hole and would like to find a nice looking plug to cover it with unless it has a practical use.

My 75 had a metal plug that filled that hole the same color as the factory paint. I removed it in order to run the wiring for my column-mounted tach. My guess is that the hole was provided for the optional column-mounted tachometer that was offered in 75.......

Every factory CJ I've seen had a plug there.

For a tach is a good guess, but it was present well before '75, so maybe not.

I mounted a tach on my steering column and ran the wires thru that hole. worked out pretty good. Now if I can figure out why I needed a tach, i'll be in good shape :)

Mine has a red lens and says Brake around the bezel in that spot. Looks factory to me.

I wonder if that red light preceeded the red brake warning light incorporated into the speedo. The block where all the brake lines come together has a spring loaded piston in it that shifts one direction or the other if a front or rear line ruptures with pedal applied, supposedly isolating the leak at least well enough to get it stopped. The piston trips a switch that illuminates the warning light. What year is your Jeep and does it have the brake warning light in the speedo? Mine is a 73 with a plugged hole and a brake warning light on the speedo.

My '72 which is very original has the emergency brake release coming out of that hole. My emergency brake release cable is about 18" long and snakes down from that spot to the emergency brake pedal. I have never seen this on any other model and I raided a '73 for parts and its release was in the common location. My CJ had all of it's orignal parts when I bought it in 1991. I am having a very hard time locating a new cable as mine is worn out...

Would the clock fit in that spot?
