Coil springs on ECJ5

Seen add selling TJ parts.
stock upper and lower control arms front and rear, front and rear stock sway bars, front and rear stock draglinks.

My spring are really stiff. This got me to thinking.
Anybody thought about converting to coils springs on a ECJ5?

 

hey Scott, i've seen a kit that converts a yj into coils, and alot of custom stuff with coilovers but never thought about using stock coils. i think anything is possible with enough fab work. good to see another wa. guy here.

 

I was thinking about this. I think it would be to much work to make pocket in the frame for the coil spring. Oh well it was fun getting the wheels turning in the old brain.

 

Throttledown Kustoms will make you a CJ5 or 6 frame set up for coil springs. Then you convert your axles or buy TJ stuff and swap the transfer case. Its a BIG job but it is doable. I broke the frame on my cj6 and ordered a replacement frame that way. Then my source of income went away and the project is "tarped" awaiting funds. BUT we did get the suspension put together and the body back on. I set it up for YJ leaves in the rear and TJ springs in the front. Kind of like an XJ. Haven't got it drivable yet, but the forklift tests show great wheel travel. The verdict is still out on street drivability. You can fit all the TJ bracketry on a wide track CJ dana 30. But its real tight. I wouldn't want to try it on a narrow track. If I were doing it again it would be a good time for Waggy axles.

 

well we are in process of building a new frame for a cj-5 and it is going to be converted to coils springs from a XJ all the way around... we will let you know on the progress of the jeep. it was a narrow track jeep, but to make things stronger and to make room for the coil buckets on the axle, it will have narrowed full width axles and four link front and 3 link rear...Grumpy1

 

grumpy1 do you think your idea would work on my 3b? i like the coil idea more and more i read about it. im changing the stock suspension anyway and in the decission stage now. any pics you got would be great along with the info. thanks, *******

 

lots of guys when reframing early Land Rovers, go coil instead of leaf. there are several companies that do that. Not that it is a CJ, but the concept is similar. With the requisite fab skills, TJ coils could be put under a CJ5/Flatty. I imagine that you could get some great articulation from one set up like that, as well as a better ride....

 

A little different but, why not stretch a ECJ5 or flatty to fit on a TJ frame? Seen it done in an older JP Mag.. Looks like a lot easier way..

I had seen those, and agree that it would be a lot to get under an ECJ5. That is why I am looking into how the rover guys do it. A SWB Series Land Rover is not much bigger than a CJ5 and they coil them all the time....

or shorten the tj frame.....not sure how well ti would work, i think the TJ have a taller hump in the back above the rear wheels.

i was thinking of using coil-overs someday when i redo my CJ6.......i think a long-arm CJ6 would be dead sexy

I HAVE FREE STOCK TJ SPRINGS!!!....just pay shipping or pickup.....i've been trying to unload them for a while....maybe one of you guys want it ....worth a try

 

For the money and the hassles I'd just put long springs on it like YJ. You get longer springs wider packs and a much nicer ride with out too moch modifing of the frame. It's not as good as coils but I like it, plus with coils you are going to need a sway bar.

I did my 51 flatfender that way and I liked it so much that I ordered my 6 frame (Advanced Frame Works) done the same way so i wouldn't have to.

 

I have some fotos saved of an awesome looking flatfender using TJ stuff I try to dig it up and get it on my photobucket.

 

There were photo's on the web about a year and a half ago of a flatfender with a cummins 4bt that had been converted to coil springs also. That thing had awesome articutlaion.

Yep thats the Jeep, its got a 4bt Cummins turbo diesel.
