I have a friend who gave me a bunch of parts out of a 1980 Jeep Wagoneer that had power steering and disc brakes. It had a 360 AMC engine, with Quadra-Trac. I got a long stroke York compressor, a power steering pump, a front axle and steering box with all the bolts and brackets. I know that the York compressor and the power steering pump will bolt right up, but I was wondering if I can use the steering box to convert my 1973 CJ5 304 to power steering? Also, is it possible to use the open knuckles to convert my jeep to disc brakes? The axle is a 6 lug pattern and has a 3.31 gear ratio. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Doc

That whole 360 assembly will bolt right in place of the 304.

Not sure about the steering box, but with enough time/money/frustration/welder burns, you could probably make it work

Not sure on the brake upgrade either, but here is some info from a drum to disk swap... http://jpmagazine.com/techarticles/93298/

you could also use the entire waggy axle, have it shortened, re gear it, and slap a set of 70's f-150 rotors and hubs on there to get your 5 on 5.5 lug pattern. That'd be a nice upgrade

You can use the backing plates and brake calipers off the front axle to start a disc brake swap...if the calipers are questionable you can still use them for cores and new ones are cheap. You'll need the "thick" front rotors for a 78-80 CJ, etc ....read the write up, explains it all.

Is the '80 front axle a pass or driver side pumpkin....I think it should be a driver side which is no good for you....I have one out of an 76 or 77 that is a pass side drop that is narrowed and going in my 83 CJ7. Not sure when they changed to driver side drop.....???

I may be wrong, but the pass side knuckle I think is a flat top that can be machined for use with hi steer arms, if you don't use the whole axle you'll want to keep both knuckles, someone will want them.

'80 Wagoneer is drivers side drop - first year. 360, TF727, NP219 (called Quadratrac on the badges but different from the BW1339 that everyone thinks of), Dana 44 front, AMC HD 20 rear.

Steering box should be fine for your swap, but they are lots of turns lock-to-lock and generally loosen up a lot by that age. Once you determine it will fit, you'll probably want new seals and an adjustment. The frame bracket won't help.

If you aren't going to use that 360, I might be interested. where in NoCal are you? I have trucks in Lodi that come this way.

Thanks for all your replies. I re-read the article on the home page about disc brake conversions a little closer and it seems to make more sense to use new parts and use the old parts as cores. One of the caliper mounting brackets is bent, and the calipers are frozen with rust. Tim, the steering box takes about
3 1/2 turns to move the pitman arm from side to side, which in my limited experience seems to be much better than what I have now. BTW I got a float dampening spring from the carb in the jeep Wagoneer and it fit perfect in
my MC 2100 carb. I wanted to get some pictures uploaded on the forum, but my dial up connection here in the sticks is really slow. Packrat, I don't think I'm going to get the 360, but if I do, I'll let you know. Everyone, thanks for all the help, Doc.

I used the PS box and frame bracket on my CJ off a mid 70s Wagoneer. I also used one half of the steering shaft and mated it to a GM column, but you could use the Wagoneer column & steering shaft with some fab work.

Well, I figured this much out; the power steering box I got from the 1980 jeep wagoneer is a saginaw box with o ring fittings and the box bolts right up in my 1973 CJ5. The only difference is that the original manual steering box bracket has 3 holes vs the four mounting holes provided with power steering box. It almost was a direct fit, except that the splines on the manual box differed slightly enough to prevent the steering shaft from sliding on the power steering box. I'll either have to buy a new shaft, or fabricate something. I'm also going to add a steering box brace and a dropped pitman arm. If anyone here has encountered this, I'd like to hear what worked for you. Thanks, Doc
