    Thanks for the link Sparky,
what I gathered was 15 inch tires were stock and 16 inch tires were an option
so either size can be used with the t-90 transmission, but the basic questions still eludes me. at a fixed engine rpm how much faster does a jeep go with 16 inch tires, compared to 15 inch tires. I was sure somebody knew this and it was common knowledge. If it is not. I will simply have to do the experiments myself by borrowing 16 inch wheels. Thanks for all your replies

Having 16" or 15" wheels doesn't make as much difference in final drive ratio as the actual tire diameter. The tires you have are a passenger car rated tire, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Going to a LT or light truck type tire will make the tire sidewall more stiff and possibly make the handling worse due to the light weight of the jeep. If your looking to replace the wheels find something you like and get tires to fit based on what you want to do with the vehicle. 16" or 15" doesn't make that much difference (I think I've heard that somewere before).

I am hoping to gain a higher top end speed by going to a 16 inch wheel and tire, because even around town. I feel like I should shift one more time
to lower the engine rpm, but if switching to 16 inch wheels and tires will only gain me a couple of miles an hour. It would not be worth the expense, although jeeps do look much better with the taller wheels and tires.

The original 16 x 6 wheels had tires that were roughly 28"-28.5" in diameter, not really much different in size then what you have now, the tires you have now are wider and of a different profile making them roughly the same in diameter as your originals but wider by at least an inch or so. Going to the original tire size will not change the speedo much and will probably make the Jeep slightly slower as I indicated before. If you want a taller tire go to some swampers that are narrow, like the 32x9.50-15LT, that will give you more mph at a lower rpm.

Okay then, thanks I will make note of that. It must be the balloon shape of the car tire That makes it look smaller. I simply asked for the cheapest car tires at the time. I think we can end this thread now. I believe I know what to ask for when it comes time to get tires for my 1955 Cj5 thanks for all your help and putting up with my lack of knowledge on this subject

Well, consider that was for a 65/66 model year Jeep.

16" wheels were the standard with 15" wheels being optional prior to that as I recall.

So depending on the year of your Jeep they may or may not be optional.

Yet it is not an obstacle I've had it for an hour and a poke at Re: 67' CJ Top Speed?

Sparky my jeep in question is a 1963. So the speedometer is probably set for 16 inch wheels. But according to Mcruff, the actual tire diameter is very similar to the tires I am currently running. So my speedometer is only off a couple of miles an hour. I thought there was a much larger difference between 15 inch and 16 inch wheels. But apparently not so, when it is time to purchase tires for the 1955. The suggestion was to buy tall thin tires in order to achieve more miles per hour without over revving the engine. when I see a jeep with 16 inch wheels and tires. They appear to be much larger
I've been told that discount tire has military style tires that fit 15 inch rim's
Therefore I will purchase the tallest tire they have, and hopefully get that little extra i am looking for. purchasing a set of 16 inch wheels. Is an expense I would like to avoid. the actual speedometer reading is not important
