I'm sure someone here has done this.

What's the best way to go about putting a receiver hitch in a bumper? I have two bumpers. Both are 2x4" steel.

I need to get a hitch on this thing so I can pull my 416.

    Sweet!

Thanks Panzer, that looks easier than I'd imagined.

Not like I'm towing much weight with my CJ-5 anway.

    Thanks Panzer.

So does that one you have just bolt onto the bottom of the bumper?

I bought a piece of receiver stock and welded to mine on green jeep. Cut a 2.5X2.5 hole on each side, slip it in, add a gusset with safety chain holes. Very strong. On Black jeep I bought one of those recivers like in the links and welded to the bottom of the existing bumper. I picked up the receiver (bumper bolt on) from walmart. I towed my 3500 pound enclosed snowmobile trailer with it yesterday.

Sorry about that, didn't answer your question!!! Yes it does mount to the
bottom of the bumper. W/ 4- grade 8 bolts through the bumper.

Sparky, I know this is not what you're talking about, this trailer hitch came with my 1963 and I was wondering if it was custom or if you have seen it for sale as a replacement for the stock drawbar on most early Cj5s. if it is custom I think it's an excellent job that I cannot take credit for.
While were on the subject, does anybody know how to set up a carrier
for a Honda XR 100 that can be bolted to the angle iron part with all the holes would love to see an example of a motorcycle carrier bolted to
the old-style trailer hitch, which I am in the process of repairing due to the previous owner, cutting a huge hole in it for the trailer electrical plug-in
what a bumb ***, pardon my Spanish. he could have bolted it anywhere but no, he cuts out
a hole in the trailer hitch

I was also thinking of the style that mounts to the bottom of the step and tow bumper. I cut the original draw bar off because it was bent from a plow that had been mounted on the Jeep. Hangs down to low and i have a D-20 in it anyway. That hitch looks pretty easy to modify anyway!

You should be able to get it from any place that repairs and sells trailers. I bought a piece with the outside already reinforced.

Any Trailer supply store will have receivers in lengths from 6" to 36". The bolt on one at walmart for about 20$ comes with four bolts and a pin.

    Panzer,
How wide (front to back) is your bumper, that is, what is the width of the face where your hitch mates up to the bumper?

Bumper is a 3" x 3" sq. tube. The flat part of the receiver plate (the part that is
in contact w/ the bumper) is 4" x 11". Then there are the "wings" each side
which are 3" long angled down @ a 45* angle. The actual reciever is 5" long and
is flush w/ the front of the plate (front of the vehicle). So it extends out from
the rear of the plate (rear of the vehicle) 1". If you need more info let me know.
I can take a pic or two in needed.

Don't think I need more info, trying to figure something out. My bumper is only 2" wide.

Fuel tank skid/support is right behind the cross member so that's going to be difficult to work with.

Here's how my Cross bumper is setup:

I've had to cut off a drawbar or two to fit, but otherwise it's been fine.

    Panzer,
I was looking at that, trying to determine if it would work with my bumper. It bolts to the cross member of the JK, my cross member is angle iron and the gas skid precludes that as well.

But if the slot were 2" it would be ideal.

Mike, I can pick up the stuff at Orscheln's to do something like the Cross but I don't have a welder or the skills. :(

I was trying to get it done cheap and easy. Guess I may not after all.
