Turbo chargin' a CJ 4 banger engine - thoughts

    1980 CJ5 with a re-built 4 banger (GM 2.5L), about 17-20K miles, 2.5" lift, 3.54 front and back and 235/75/15s, currently stock SR4. **sser driving up hill.

    One of the gentlemen at NAPA builds and upgrades cars on his own...after talking with him regarding brake lines (etc.), he mentioned that rather than looking to exchange the 4 cylinder for a 6, he started suggesting to think about an engine add on upgrade to somekind of a "turbo" for around $300...increased efficiency, horsepower and mileage. We will talk with him further this weekend when I pick up the brake line and calipers.

    I thought you all may have some "take" on what he may be talking about...anyone have any experience or thoughts? I haven't found much on this in the forums. Generally, I plan on using for mild (timber) trailing and street driving. Hopefully, moving up to 31 or 32s for tires in the future...gain some "cool" factor.

    *waves hand* these arent the droids you're looking for :D

    Run away -- swiftly ;)

    #1 no turbo upgrades exist for $300
    #2 engine can't handle it, especially the crank, pistons and compression ratio.
    #3 if remotely possible mechanically, it would detonate a piston fast

    I personally loved the inline 6 in the late 70's.

    IIRC the 151 has the Chevy 90 degree bell pattern (?), so you could swap in a Chevy V6/V8 if you prefer (or even a Chevy inline 6). Probably about as much work as the 232 or 258, when you swap mounts etc. I understand the biggest liability is the SR-4 ... it might last if you have the right driving habits and don't go overboard with the engine. No personal experience with them though.
