    Hello

I am new to the site new to the jeep world. I bought a 71 jeepster commando over the weekend. I think that is in good shape but needs a little work. The jeep has been under a shelter for 2 years with no use. It has no brakes at all. It is original and has the V6 and is automatic. It will crank and run, but the longer it runs the lower the oil pressure gets. It starts off at about 40-42 then in about 30 min it goes down to about 20-25. I can give it gas and it goes back up to 40-42. The jeep has no oil leaks and one small tranny fluid leak. What is the first thing I need to do or any tips someone has will be welcome. I think the carb and oil pump/ pan may be gummed up due to the length of time with no use. Thanks guys. Alamo 707

Change the oil and filter and see what happens.

You're worried about that oil pressure? Sounds fine to me.

Rule of thumb is 10 PSI/1000 RPM.

Buick oil pumps are external. The timing cover/oil pump housing is aluminum. So tolerances are tighter when it's cold as it warms up it expands. Thus your pressure drops, that and the oil gets thinner as it gets warmer.

It doesn't sound like a problem to me. I'd not muck with it.

    :iagree:

I'd repair the brakes, replace all the fluids/lubricants and drive it.

What is the best oil to use?

What is the cost of the full brake job?

FSM is your friend. :) They're available from http://www.thejeep.com/

    10W30 in a V6.

Brakes? Hmm, depends on the condition of the drums, etc. If they need to be turned/replaced whatnot.

You can price it out on most of the autoparts stores or Jeep parts stores online pretty easily.

The same brake upgrades that are listed in the tech section for a CJ will work on a Commando.

The good old FSM says: Normal Oil Pressure...33 psi @ 2400 RPM. Sounds like you're good to go. Change the oil and let 'er rip.

The oil change and the carb treatment went smooth this weekend. I have no oil leaks but have a tranny leak in the rear of it. Is there any type of stopleak or anything I can try?? Thanks

Is it gear oil (brown) or ATF (red)? Gear oil will be coming from your transfer case. If it's not pouring out, it's fine - Jeeps leak. If it's red, it's from your automatic transmission, and depending on where it's coming from it could be easy or hard to fix it. Again, if it's just a few drops I'd let it go for now. Sometimes you can add some snake oil to the ATF that will soften the seals in automatics and make them shift better, but I don't think there's any additive that's really effective for leaks.

It is red. It is a stady drip about every 15 sec.
