Homebrew Winch Plate Anyone?

    Reading the thread on cheapy Ramsey winches got me to thinking...

    I've been wanting to put a winch on the front of the flattie for a loooong time now, but the cost of not only the winch but all the other doodads that I'd want/need to do it right kept putting the project back on hold. Anyway, I just started measuring and scheming again. :rofl:

    Just how tough would it be to properly fabricate a good mounting system for a small (8000#) winch?

    Because I'm running a manual saginaw box on an early cCommando cast mount, I only have about 18" between the box and the inside of the right-side frame rail. That pretty much means I have to put the winch up above the bumper. I'm not very happy about that, but I'm not going to re-engineer my steering at this point.

    Idears fellers? :?

    Steve it shouldnt be hard at all. Just get some 1/4" plate, take it to a place a get a 90 bent on each side, with the front being a couple inches tall, that way you can cut and mount a fairlead on it. Then on the back side just about an inch tall. These bends will help keep the plate from twisting while your actually winching. Then all you have to do is drill the holes to mount it to the frame and the holes for the winch. So depending on how much you can pic up the plate for and have it bent all you'll have in it is the time to cut and drill some holes. Another option is to get the universal mount from HF. Thats whats on the front of my TJ, even though they said it was universal I still had to drill 2 holes. But it worked out nicely. As for the other stuff that goes with it, save up some $$ and just get a winch pack it will have everything you need. I think have about 100 bucks or so in the other stuff, snatch block, a couple D rings, tree saver.

    not to knock building your own; but the way steel prices are, plus shop fees for cutting/breaking (cause at least 1/4" should be used) you're gonna around a hundred smackers around here. a warn mount is around the same or cheaper online. search warn.com for red letter dealers. they have the best prices.

    Harborfreight has/had an almost identical mount for ~the same price. But, they may not carry it any more.

    The harbor freight version was just as beefy as my Ramsey-made mount.
