Anyone recognise this transfer case ?

    I'm in UK so Jeep / Dana parts are rare.
    I want to fit an alternative engine and gearbox to my 1978 CJ-5 and this would be perfect -

    It doesn't look like my current Dana 20.
    I've seen them before being used to convert 2wd vans and pick-ups to 4wd. The input has a custom flange so any rwd gearbox can be connected.

    Anyone know what it is ?

    Center section looks like a Dana 300 but with different output/input yokes than the US jeep version. But i could be wrong.

    I was going to guess some kind of D20. Not sure what that casting sticking out on the input side is all about. Single shifter, apparently.

    It's been identified by someone as a Dana 300.
    They were used in UK by a firm to convert 2wd vans and pick-ups into 4wd.
    The input has an adapter so that a short driveshaft will fit instead of having a gearbox to transfer box adapter. Very similar to the Suzuki SJ method.
    I'm thinking that a standard driveshaft rubber coupling between gearbox and this transfer box would allow me a massive choice of engine and gearbox options so am very tempted in trying to buy.

    Looks like a Dana 300 to me also with different adapters than are normally found on US versions. The only problem with a driveshaft between the gearbox and transfer box (commonly called a "divorced" setup here as opposed to having the two "married") is that it takes up a lot of length which you don't have a surplus of in a CJ-5. Would mean your rear driveshaft would have to be extremely short.

    I would pass on it, unless you have room for a door stop. As previously mentioned a cj-5 does not have enough room to put anything more than the options that have already been heavily discussed on this forum.

    If I were you, I would find a nice little prado, patrol, or landy, yank its guts and transplant them in your cj-5. That way you have the best of both worlds: a vehicle that has the look you want, and the parts availability to keep you in an operable vehicle. On the other hand, you could buy a parts vehicle from north america and have it shipped home. Apparently it costs about 1000-1500cdn to ship shore to shore to the UK, although I have not checked this myself.
