Noticed this Saturday evening and once driving in this morning. Coming up to a stop I let off the gas the engine drops to idle, I brake hard and the engine climbs in rpms. It drops back to idle when I let off the brake. I haven't looked at anything yet but: Is there a vacume advance that could be faulty? Or maybe the petal arm is pushing on the throttle linkage? As far as I know it's all original. thanks.

A bad motor mount allowing the engine to shift might be another possibility.

Well I finally looked it over and there's no obvious answer. The throttle linkage and brake lever are well away from each other. It doesn't do it all the time but when it does I can almost rev the engine by pushing the brake pettal. Kind of unnerving when wanting to stop.

Is the brake petal pushing on the body in any way to push the linkage where it bolts to the body? Just a thought.

Does it do it (rev when pushing on the brake pedal) when the Jeep is not moving?

Mine will do the same thing, but I figured it out. My feet are too big

Seriously... Look at the linkage above the accelerator pedal. It's pretty close to the brake. My foot will catch it at times and push the accelerator while braking. I just know what it is when it happens, so I don't worry anymore.

Speedbuggy must be psychic! It's been colder lately so I've been wearing shoes instead of flip/flops. Noticed this driving home last night, edge of my shoe just touches the gas petal. The petals are too close together. Kind of sportscar-like. thanks.

WOW I remember that. Mid 80's or something?

On both my '64 and '71, I simply removed the gas pedal for that very reason. Just the "nub" is good enough.
