I am planning on converting my 1971 V6 CJ5 to a Saginaw power steering setup. I would like to retain the look and feel of the original Jeep as much as possible.

Mcruff has some parts available that will make the job easier. He mentioned to me that the drivers side exhaust manifold would need to be changed to a rear exit type to clear the new steering shaft.

I have gone through all of the pictures that people have posted, but havent seen any that show how the exhaust was re worked. I was wondering if any had some pictures of this that they could share or any thoughts on the subject.

Mid to late '80 Buicks with V6 engines have the flat style/ rear dump exhaust manifold. If I get a chance I'll get a pic posted today. There may be more years that used them, but that's what I"ve seen at the local Pick N Pull yard.

Here's what I've got. It's kinda difficult to really see it well as there is a lot of stuff in the way of taking a realy good shot. Hopefully this will help you. The front of the Jeep is to the left in the pic.

That looks like it works fine. I just picked up some manifolds and started laying things out and it didnt look like the forward dump would work. I'll start checking around for a new drivers side manifold like yours. Thanks for the shot it gives me a good idea.

Did you use the original column?

I used a rebuilt GM tilt column that I bought from Centech

You should be able to use manifolds off of a mid 80's Buick that had a V6.
I don't believe it matters if its a 231, oddfire or evenfire. Take measurements of critical points and wander around the junk..... ooops, I mean Auto Dismantlers yard.

I used a passenger-side manifold off of a mid-to-late-'70s 231. This manifold looks almost identical to the stock 225 manifold except that the part where it dumps is a little shorter. This allowed me to snake the pipe around the Saginaw shaft. I'm running a Postal Jeep column.

Great. That manifold look similar to the one I have. It came from a later model commando and is short like yours. I am either going to use the postal column or one from a 1972.

If you would like to do it with all jeep parts .Use exhaust manifolds off a 69-71 commando and the steering box mount from the same . If you cannot find commando manifolds the one you need is the driverside exhaust manifold from a late 70's early 80's Buick Regal .You can even use the "Y" pipe from the commando.Bill

Bob do you happen to remember how long the Postal Jeep Column is? I'm looking at the Jeep and I think the 72 column will be to long. Its 35" and with that length I don't know if it will clear the motor mount.

The manifold's I have are from an early 70's commando. It looks like they might work if I can figure out a column.

    I think it's roughly 27" or so.

Here is a photo of how an intermediate steering column mounts so you know why they are the length they are. The postal column is around 28½" overall, about ½,¾" of it hangs thru the floor.

Beaurtiful Jeep! I think I'll need to get a postal column or mount my 1972 column through the dash like that. Any idea where you can get that mounting plate?

Probably gonna need that from the donor jeep you got the column. Unless someone else knows where to get one from.

    Hey guys!
I just picked up a DJ and have stripped the column/steering box and am getting ready to put it in the 5. This question is for Bob! Did you say "passenger side exhaust manifold" from a 231? My stock exhaust won't work so I'm trying to figure out exactly what manifold will work. I want a setup just like your pics. Thanks, Dave

The cool thing about the postal column is that with a little work you can move the column up or down to adjust the angle of the steering shaft as needed. The bottom of the column is supported by a rubber/metal grommet that screws down to the floorboards. The column floats in this grommet and bolts solidly to the dash with two bolts. That upper bracket can be easily relocated up or down on the tube as needed for your particular taste, it is only tack-welded from the factory. You can easily have 3-4 inches of linear movement in the postal column and still retain full functionality. Just be sure to check the driving position before you weld it all up!

Moving the column up or down may give you enough difference in the steering shaft angle to make it work. I chose to fab up a new steering shaft with 3/4" round stock and mini u-joints from Speedway motors. I also used a 3/4" wooden dowel (several of them actually) to determine the final length of my steering shaft, since I don't have a slip-shaft in my system. It made for a nice, clean install overall, and it works really nicely!

    Hey Dave,
Yes, that manifold pictured is from the passenger-side of a mid-70's 231-equipped car. It's almost identical to the factory 225 manifolds except the "dump" is a little shorter so it allowed me to just clear the steering shaft.
