I bought a rebuilt transmission and overdrive and rebuilt my T-case. Went to put in overdrive and found I had a T-14 with a 26 tooth T-case. (overdrive is for 29 tooth). I decided to forget the overdrive for now and just get it in the road. (will change case later) Went to put mainshaft gear on back of trans and found the new nut I bought did not fit (got from jeep supply house). Ordered 7/8"-14 nut from McMaster Carr and it is not right either. (my old nut no good). Now what?

I voted to keep looking for the nut. At least you can drive it around while you save up for the new tcase ;)

BTDT well sorta. I put at tranny back together with some questionable parts once in a 84 CJ-7. It drove fine for 4-5 months. I sell the jeep to a friend of a friend and the tranny locks up at 60 mph, trashes tranny and drive shaft. I never knew for sure it was my disregard for proper procedures or not but always wondered.

BTW you ever get that snow plow hooked up?

    Ducks-Bass,
Have driven the jeep 3 blocks in the last year. Was wanting to get it on the road this week so I could mount the plow but I'm one nut short (if you don't count me)

I went through a similiar problem.
I got the wrong one in town, another wrong one from Herm, then a wrong one from Krage.
Eventually got the correct nut from Krage.
    Keep trying.

Got one of the ones I have from Krage. It is metric and is close but not right and not worth messing up my threads. AKCJ How did you go about getting the right one? My guess is they have a stock of the wrong size and I figured they would just send another wrong one (because it is close). And shipping back a $2 part 15 times is crazy.

They have a stock of more than one size. Different year d18's require different nuts. Somehow I doubt that they sent you a metric nut but who knows.
Anyway, keep trying. You can whip this thing.

Where did you find the 10 spline, 26 tooth gear? According to Novak, there is no 26 tooth, 10 spline gear for the D18, and the one for the D20 has a different tooth angle.

Grandpa. The jeep came with the 26 tooth 10 spline gear. I was told it was for a Dana 20 but really have no idea. It fits fine and the angle seems to be correct but where it came from I have no idea. I can check Sunday to see if it has numbers on it if anyone needs them for some reason. It has me confused too. I wonder if it is 20 gears in a 18 case (don't know much about them). I replaced one of the gears during rebuild and it was an 18 gear i ordered and it fit fine.

Willysnut. I still have some humor bout it. I missed one season on Jeepin and should be able to laugh till spring then if it is not fixed I will start to cry. This is my first Jeep I bought it running and have had it a year and only driven it once (about 3 blocks). I'm not giving up yet.

AKCJ. The reason I think the nut they sent was metric is because the 1-1/4" socket does not fit it it takes a 33mm. It is just a hair over 1-1/4".

UPDATE. Stopped by local Jeep dealer and they found another dealer that had 2 of the nuts in stock. They are shipping them to me and I should be rolling next week. Got my fingers crossed.

Got a nut from Walcks today. (i ordered all i could find hoping one would be right) I looed wrong but after a little bit of work i got it to work. The thread count was right the pitch was diffrent so it acted like it was cross threading but it wasn't. Now my question is what it the torque setting for this nut. The overdrive was suppose to be 100ftlbs is this nut the same?

Nope, not 70. FSM says, "Torque nut 130 to 170 lb-ft."
