Suggestions For Setting Up An Emergency Brake For My Cj-5?

    I probably need to post some pics of the rear wheel inner hubs and interior console area, so I'll have to update that one later.

    I bought this CJ without an emergency brake, probably because the prior owner had converted this to early 80's Toyota axles and just never made something up.

    The Toyota e-brake system is designed for a straight side-pull from a cable mounted on the diff area. I think part of the mount may still be there but I'm assuming I'll have to make a bracket.

    I need to configure a pull handle up front and cable running back to the diff area, then to each side hub.

    Has anyone done this, and if so is there some kind of kit to buy for this conversion? There is nothing there now, no handle or anything. Starting from scratch.

    Should I be looking for used components from eBay or similar? I think I'd prefer a center-pull arm between the seats, mounted to the floor.

    What do you have for a transfer case? The stock D18 parking brake does work if properly rebuilt.

    Some folks like the M38A1 pull handle, between the seats.

    If your axles retained their cables, this may be a viable alternative.

    A tad expensive, but it will eliminate the issue of a rear driveline/diff failure locking you in the rig.

    That's a cool product but not the application I'd prefer for wheeling. Thanks for the recommendation!

    You just missed a complete original parking brake setup in the classifieds by less than a week. Your CJ had a cane pull lever under the left side of the dashboard, connected by a cable, to the drum brake on the back of your D18 transfer case. They work well when maintained.

    I set my 3B up with individual pull handles between the seats back about 1975 so I had cutting brakes on the 11" Bendix drums that were then on it. One of those handles was later repurposed for a D18 brake and the other for a winch brake after the rear discs went on in the early 80's. That was recently changed out yet again with now one of those levers repurposed for Wilwood manual calipers on the rear discs. I bought Wilwood's cable assembly but Summit's house brand is identical and a lot cheaper. The levers are from early/mid 70's Toyota Corollas and modified a bit.     I don't think I have that under there. I'll have to check. Is there a D19 TC? As I recall, I had like a 19 and 20, sequential numbers, in transfer case and transmission.

    Can't check right now, I'm up at the cabin (without the Jeep, dammit!).

    That's impressive as hell.

    Not sure I'm ready for those kinds of upgrades yet. I just haven't had the ability to really test this Jeep yet, to see how it truly performs offroad for me. Once I know it's a true keeper, I'll have to assess how deeply in love I plan to go with it. If I see it as a 'lifetime keeper', like my boat, then any investment will be in the mix.

    Right now I'm just trying to get the basics dialed-in so I can go out and challenge trouble the ways I have in the past with my other rigs.

    Chances are you have a Dana 20 transfer case. Potentially a Dana 300 (these were on late model CJs). The D20 and D300 are centered for the rear output. The Dana 18 pairs with an offset rear Dana 44 axle. I’m pretty sure your Toyota axles are centered. Fj40 rear axles, were however, offset.

    Folks have paired the D18 t-case with a centered-diff rear axle, but that would be unusual and it’s generally not recommended due to drive line angles.

    The D18 will take the drive shaft parking brake shown above. Some people are keen on them… some not so much. Although a close relative and quite similar mechanically, the D20 does not accept this brake. The CJs with the D20 had brakes at the rear wheels. Other differences include low-range ratios: 2.46:1 for the D18, 2:1 for the D20. And while the D18 will take an overdrive unit, the D20 will not. Otherwise, both are strong cases, and both can take the popular terra low 3.15:1 kit.

    If you have a truck 4 speed, then it’s possible you’ve got a T19. But more likely a T18 with the dauntless V6. Do not confuse the Borg-Warner Model T18 transmission with the Dana Spicer Model 18 transfer case, like so many do.

    All this leads to your parking brake. Cable brakes at the rear wheels, a hand pull lever between the seats (I couldn’t give up my center console). A custom bracket or two, an equalizer, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to sort out.

    I am in the process of adding e brakes to my 11” drums. I was able to source all of the parts except one bracket that should be east to fab from Sam at Partsdude4x4 including a salvaged handle for the front left dash. This is like the 1975 (?) set up.

    I have 11” brakes from a mid 70s CJ on my ECJ5. Mix of cables and a foot brake from a YJ.

    Finally got back home so I got some pics. Pardon the muck; haven't cleaned it up since my last outing yet.

    My driveline is located to the left of the TC, and there's actually a pretty good angle back to the diff, moving down and to the center.

    Which TC is this?

    That is what I used, but lokar's version. Handle is between the seats. Works well, but you lose center console options so no where to put a latte.
