Been toying with the idea of converting to YJ springs but I am not sure what springs to use. Have any of you did this with stock YJ springs and if so how did it effect your height ? Right now I have stock shackles and 2 1/2" lift springs and I would like to stay the same height or a little lower. Not sure if stock springs will do it or if I need something else.

There are different springs depending upon which model. The four cylinder had lighter in the front and the hard top six had heavier load springs.

So I guess an early CJ5 would benefit from the light springs ?

I was originally going to go with heavy front and light rear since I have a big winch in front, and my BDS springs sat with a rake. I went with heavy-heavy after the vendor talked me into it due to rear tire carrier, rear tank and roll bar. (I kinda think the vendor was too lazy to order a mis-match). It sits level, but noticeably higher than my old BDS springs.
I think it depends on what weight you have added (or plan to add) to your jeep.

    It depends.

If you have a stock cj with say a v6 and 3 speed and soft top than yes the light springs are likely good.

If you have a heavy engine, snow plow, winch, granny tranny, roll cage, or you tow trailers you might opt for the heavy springs.

It's a good idea to weigh your jeep with front and rear splits as you normally drive it. Fwiw mine is about 1000lbs different from summer soft top to winter snow plow and hard top with tools and all.

Stock springs are perfectly flat on a YJ. The kits to convert to YJ springs for an early CJ typically use 2 1/2 to 4 inch lift springs. Stock springs are used for SOA conversions which net about a 5-6” lift.
