Trying to remove the T handle speed control for the governor. 1952 parts jeep that is mostly rust. Governor itself is gone as is the cable but the T handle control on the dash remains. I's like to remove it but not sure how. The handle itself appears to have a pin, at the base of the "T" that would go through part that extends behind the dash. Is removing the pin the way to remove the set up? Just thought I'd ask before I flip something up trying to save a vintage piece.
Been searching around but haven't found the info I seek. Thanks for any help.

Depends - which side of the dash is the mounting nut?

You have a nut on the face of the dash? And a roll pin, both ends visible? (Or is it a possibly a set screw?) In which case remove the handle.

I would otherwise usually expect there to be a nut or a clip behind the dash, allowing the entire unit to be extracted.

Those handles are worth gold to some people, so worth saving. It has been twenty years since I installed my handle, but I believe that there is just a nut on the back side. I may have a spare I can check or will check my 3a, which is in winter storage.

There is a nut on the steering wheel side of the dash, what looks like a pin all the way through the handle and, behind the dash a long odd shaped piece that threads on opposite the nut but, when fully unthreaded won’t come off. Seems to me the handle and nut both have to come off, then pass threaded cable housing (?) through the back side of the dash panel.

That pin might be a challenge.

If it is a roll pin (spring pin) I'd use a flat-tipped punch, while backing the handle with a heavy 'anvil.'

I have sent a note to a guy on the CJ2a page who answers a lot of governor questions over there. I had to PM him, since i don't have his email.

We don't have a lot of info on governors and we get lots of hits from people searching. So I'd like to add more. So I'd like to post the solution.

Rotate the T-handle a 1/4 turn to release from the bale wire and then pull directly out. Then you can remove the nut from the housing and remove it from the back side. You should not have to remove any roll pins. To replace the cable you would need to pry the shaft open a bit and work in the cable with a swagged end then reconnect the threaded rod on to the the turning yoke and reattach to the governor arm.

Here is what Greg sent me -
As far as you friend's governor T-handle goes there at least two styles of T handles on our CJ2As to the best of my knowledge. One has a hex nut on the dash side of the T-handle mount which I believe is the later iteration. The CJ5 may have a different set up then the CJ2A/3As. In order to remove the 2A/3A dash mount you will need disconnect the clevis from the governor and remove the clevis fork from the threaded end of the braded wire. Then you will pull the handle wire out of the dash mount. Now you can loosen the hex nut at the dash and remove the handle mount from the underside of the dash. On the early style (w/ cone shaped dash escutcheon) you will also need to disconnect the clevis from the governor and remove the clevis fork from the threaded end of the solid wire. If it is an original installation you will have a handle stop clamp on the under side of the inner side of the wire close to the T-handle shaft so you can also pull the T-handle wire from the dash mount. Now you will loosen the hex nut at the back side of dash mount (behind the cone shaped dash escutcheon)and remove the handle mount from the front side of the dash. Do not grab the cone shaped dash escutcheon with pliers as they are nickel plated soft brass and will be permanently damaged !
    I hope this is helpful.

I hope this along with 48cj2a's post gets the job done. I plan to capture all this and post it on Farm Jeep page.

Thank you gentlemen. I'll give it a bash on Thursday. Busy the next two days after work. I will update then.

This is definitely the later style with the nut on the outside of the dash. I tried just pulling the handle out of the housing but it resisted. The cable is not connected connected to anything and may even not be there. I had a difficult sticking my ugly head under the dash to see anything. The floor is full of stuff. I'll be more vigilant in my next effort.
