I just replaced the whole clutch assembly, t.o. Bearing, (with LUK kit), pilot bushing, clutch fork and return spring on my 1970 cj5 dauntless, t14/d18.

everything shifts smoothly, no more screeching sound, etc.

However, sometimes when I press in the clutch pedal when shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, I hear a clunking sound that seems to come from under the drivers side floorboard. I can slightly feel it and it feels like something shifting back in place or something. But the feel is slight. It doesn’t happen all the time and like I said the shifting is extremely smooth. It seems to happen at higher rpm’s and only at the point when I depress the pedal.

this symptom didn’t happen with the old clutch.

I put the tcase in neutral and shifted through all the gears but there was no noise.

I’ve searched the site but didn’t find anything that matched this symptom.

any thoughts or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance.

    Dale

    Engine/trans mount? Universal joint?

Can you replicate the noise in the driveway shifting the torque loading from forward to reverse and back?

I’d start simple. With the vehicle off (parking brake on or wheels chocked) lay under it and observe the movement of the pedal arm and all the linkage while someone else depresses and releases the clutch. Perhaps some part of it is making contact with the body structure or another drive train component.

Definitely check you motor/transmission mounts. Also make sure the clutch fork is properly seated on the pivot ball. You should be able to see in there with a light and a mirror or your cell phone camera with the flash.

Do you have this? Or is it tight?

Here’s a pic of my clutch fork on the pivot ball. It appears right to me but would value your opinion?

I do have that and have confirmed it’s torqued up.

however, while checking the torque on all the trans cross member, etc. as you all suggested, I saw what I think might be contributing to the issue. Looks like my tran mount needs to be shifted and/or replaced?

If so, can that be done without pulling the transmission by putting a jack under the trans somewhere?

yeah you should be able to replace the trans mount without removing the trans. If you're going to order a new trans mount, might as well get new motor mounts too if the motormounts are not looking to good either.

So after looking in my parts book for the trans mount part number, I noticed the circled set of trans mount parts that are missing from my Jeep.

so rather than shifting my mount to center it, I’m thinking I should install these pieces as well? Is that right?

    Looks good.

I don't think that illustration is for a CJ5. Parts 9.128-1 and the other items to in the upper left don't look like CJ-5 parts. Is the illustration for a Commando? I've not seen the parts you've circled in a CJ, but to be fair, my CJ experience is limited to a few Jeeps.

On both my '69 and '71 Jeeps that came with T-14s, the mounts like lik this.

    Maint mount is off-center:

The anti-torque mount is an F-134 engine mount bolted to the right frame rail with an L-bracket to the transfer case:

Why does the t-case pan look tilted? Is it just the picture making it look that way?

That's the way it all bolts up with all new motor mounts and all new transmission mounts. I shrugged my shoulders and moved on with my life.

That looks like an exhaust pipe on the left, is it? Are you sure that's not bumping something at times?

Hey Pete. I tried to replicate this in the driveway this afternoon. I could get it to barely replicate in 1st but wasn’t quite able to replicate in reverse. But that could’ve just been the way I was working it.

however, I did find that the bolts on the cross member support that I thought were torqued to spec could still be tightened by hand with a ratchet. So I’ve tightened all of those as tight as I could. I’m guessing my cheap torque wrench isn’t so accurate.

that seems to have helped some.

after seeing Glen’s post about the exhaust pipe, he may be onto something.

After getting home, I checked what his eagle eye spotted in the photo and sure enough, the exhaust pipe is almost resting on the cross member support. Maybe 1/16 or 1/8 inch of space while sitting.

I’ll get that fixed and see what that does.

I still haven’t checked my motor mounts but will do that as well.

I did notice today that if I push the clutch pedal in slower, I never get the noise. Even at the higher RPMs.

The illustration in post #9 shows parts that were used on earlier F134 CJ5s with the T90 trans, maybe up to around ‘67? Your T14 uses the torque mount in the channel of the frame.
