It's a Volvo desert here! I found a couple of candidates but I don't want to pay $1k for an engine and wiring harness.

2.3 4cyl Ecoboost or 1.5 3cyl Ecoboost? I really like the idea of the 2.3 because it's available in RWD format in Mustangs and Rangers.

I personally think a 406ci 351 W with a 4" stroker crank would be an amazing Jeep engine. Lots of stroke and cubic inches in a fairly light and compact package. Doesn't even need great heads to make gobs of low end torque.

Yup, a 406 would make a great Jeep engine. So would an old school 383 sbc put together with a lot of stock parts, or as I did in the early 80's, all GM parts. That made an engine that would run at 300 rpm over almost anything even with a not so good CR and was relatively cheap to build. My latest creation was much more expensive endeavor but I'm pretty sure it will eliminate that "almost".

There are a near infinite number of engines out there that could be used. All with their individual advantages and deficiencies, be it performance, engine availability, parts availability, adapability, and cost. 73 CJ5's list runs the gamut from really meek to wild. One needs to carefully consider the desired end use and the potential budget and go from there.

I lost interest in this for awhile but I got the front end done and working on the rear. I had to put a transmission in the jk and rebuild the 241 so that made an impact on the progress as well. Keeping the venerable Fhead for nostalgia sake if nothing else. I need to get a d18 to lower the driveshaft angle and it'll line up better with the 14b offset.

I managed to do the whole rear suspension (minus shocks) and tweak some things on the front today so it's finally a roller. Nothing has changed. It's all recycled junk. It seems to sit lower than when the 33s were on there which is what I was aiming for. Still have lots to do. I'll more than likely order new rubber next.

I picked up this D20 PTO winch setup from a member here so once I get the engine and steering gear in place I can see about working this in.

You’re making progress. That looks like a lot of tire and axle for an F134 to pull around, unless you go with really low gears.
You might need to reconsider that Mercruiser 470. They have the same displacement of a Dauntless,( but only 4 cylinders) with either 170 or 190 hp, and tons of torque, plus they’re much lighter weight. They also have a Chevy bellhousing pattern. That would be great in your 3B!
If you’re set on the F134, the swamp buggy modified engines deck the blocks 3/16” to 1/4” so the pistons stick way above the deck, then they mill the piston tops to fit the combustion chamber in the head, raising compression to around 10:1. Then a much hotter grind cam is needed, but then the F134 can make a lot more power.

Definitely plan to keep the fhead for the foreseeable future. I scored a set of 12 bolt hmmwv wheels with bfg Baja tires yesterday so now I can focus on the engine and steering.

Added some bling to the D60.

Ahh, steering. I knew this was going to be one of the less enjoyable things I had to redo. Trying to fit the pto winch up there with this gear is no problem but it sits over the frame rail where the engine bay runner goes and that makes things more interesting. I threw that square tubing up there to get an idea of where the gear would have to sit to make some room. Still in the planning stages so nothing permanent of course.

F134 is coming together finally. I polished the crank std/std, bored it .030, got the pistons and rings today so I'll hone it to final size. The head will get the works also. I have some other misc. things to do but it's getting there. I really wanted to get a hotter cam since I'm milling the fool out of the block and head to raise compression but I don't know how much lift the cam can have. I'm mainly thinking about the exhaust valve and head clearance. Really I was thinking more overlap would help with higher rpms where I tend to run the thing anyways. I don't do much low rpm crawling if I'm honest.

How long do the 4 bangers last at higher rpm with the 4.375" stroke and heavy rods?

Got some things done to the engine and all the parts except the camshaft have been ordered. I cleaned up the exhaust side of the block some. Still more to do but it's coming along. Cut the guides for a positive seal on the head and started working on opening up the intake port. Next will be valve job and resurface the head. I've spent a few hours this afternoon trying to decide what to do about the camshaft, the only thing holding everything up at this point. I put out a feeler for a reground cam and am waiting to hear back on what they can find on the shelf. If that's a bust I'm going to try and have a cam reground. Going back with a stock unit will be plan C.

Noooo! An LS would be a good candidate but I'd rather just build another Jeep. This 3b is pretty much based around the Fhead and putting a V6 or V8 in its place would cause me to have to rework almost everything. I'm ready to just drive it again at this point. I didn't need to do a one ton swap but it's something I wanted to do and the axles fell in my lap, so why not? The engine rebuild was inevitable though since it was burning and leaking copious amounts of oil at an ever growing rate.

I still have a D30/D44 that I would like to throw under an MB or GPW if I find one for a decent price.

No stock cam with those pretty exhaust ports!

You should add fuel injection and a junkyard Buick 3.8 supercharger for some extra grunt:
