I have pulled the heads off of probably hundreds of engines, but nothing I try will get the head to break free on the F134 in my CJ5.

Yes, I am sure all the head bolts are out. I have driven a thick paint scraper / putty knife between block and head at various points around the head, I have whacked it with a block of wood and hammer each side, front and rear. Still stuck fast.

Before I gave up for the day I bolted a chain to the head and put some good tension on it with my engine hoist. That did break the seal toward the rear as some coolant began to drip out. I figure to leave it hanging by the hoist for a day or two to see if it pulls free.

I am pulling the head for valve work.

Isn't there one under the carburetor? But since you're sure you must have gotten that one too.

The carb head bolt got me too when I had to redo my head gasket. Easily overlooked/forgotten

Aha! First time into a F-Head, and didn't know there was a bolt under the carb. That is why I posted this thinking I surely missed something. Going to head back down to the barn.

So, even though I thought I had gotten them all, I only got the ones I could see.

    That was it, thanks guys.

I do have a FSM, just failed to look at it. The head lifted right off once I really did have "all" the head bolts out. I feel like a nimrod newbie now, will probably have to cover my head with a brown paper bag, like Sylvester's son, when I go to the Willys Reunion next month.

The problem with this engine is it was sucking oil down the valve guides.
I want to use umbrella seals on top of the guides in addition to the wimpy "O" rings under the keepers. I tried a seal for a Ford small block but the guide is too big. If I don't find some that fit I will have the machine shop cut them.

Pretty sure they are worn out. I bought the Jeep from an estate sale, and the owners son said it was parked due to using oil and smoking.

When I got the jeep running it would smoke on start up but then clear up. Ran great, then it suddenly started smoking all the time. The Jeep had sat in a barn since 1979 or so, and I expect the old seals had dried out and finally fell apart. I did a compression test and got real good compression wet or dry.

It only had 33K miles on it, but was used as a tender on a big used car lot, probably started and put in gear without warm up over the years it served that purpose.

I just removed the valves and can verify the guides are worn based on the amount of wiggle room they have in the old guides compared to the new guides. I didn't do anything scientific, just a shade tree mechanic sort of test.

As I said the engine has very good compression, so this ought to put the ole gal right again. I have a set of new guides and NOS OEM intake valves. I will probably lap the exhaust valves while I can get at them, none of them look bad. Everything is very well oiled.

If I were you id be very suspect of the rings being broken if the condition is unknown even with the good compression. Iv only had three of these engines apart but they all had broken top rings. If the head is stuck on I use a block of wood and hammer up on where the spark plug holes are. There is a nice strong area

Appreciate the heads up, but I am confident the rings are not broken, and I got the head off.

I’d suggest checking the exhaust valves and guides for wear closely. On most engines the exhaust wears worse than the intakes due to the heat they are exposed to.

I have almost always found broken rings in my f-heads. Always wondered why.

    Pete,

Interesting about always finding broken rings. Mine show no indication of it.

    Bob,

No, I never have had disc brakes on a Jeep. I may put some on the next one I build, but I don't have any to sell.

All I can guess is maybe because the vehicles were used seasonally, and sat idle for long periods?
