T86 Reverse Question

    1965 cj5 v6 with I assume a t86. Three speed anyways. In reverse, the cane will fall to neutral if you depress the clutch and are not physically holding it up.

    I should add that the cane is modified with straight 1/2 “ rod. I haven’t removed the boot cover or top of trans. Should the transmission stay in reverse or is this normal? This is my first vehicle of this vintage.

    Sounds like a shifter issue. I’d remove the shifter top and shift it on the bench and see if it holds in Reverse position. If not then it’s in the top. If the top holds in place firmly then it’s in the transmission.

    Thanks, I see in parts diagrams the detents on the rails of the shift tower. Will investigate
