Flanged 44 Axle Shaft Plug Source

been looking around for the dust/dirt plugs that go in the end of the flanged 44 axle shaft. Anyone have a source for these?

 

You're talking about the round black plastic plug that goes into the axle shaft itself, right?

 

Yes Nate. The piece you knock out to gain access to the retainer bolts.

Mine are steel. Thinking a freeze plug of the correct diameter might work but I’m hoping to find the right thing if it’s out there.

 

I’ve seen plastic, rubber, and steel soft plugs to fill that hole. I’ve seen way too many unmolested axles with the steel plugs to believe at least some of them were not factory. A plastic or rubber plug would be much easier for future service. I’m curious why you want to plug that hole. Isn’t it covered by the brake drum? Is it for restoration purposes?

 

I used freeze plugs. The brake drum covered most of the hole but mine still had a small area exposed on each shaft. The plugs were inexpensive at Orielly's.
These fit... but mine are aftermarket axle shafts, measure yours to get the right size.

 

My '70 axle doesn't have these plugs, is there a particular reason why one would need them?

 

just to keep the mud and junk out of there as much as possible.

 

The brake drum covers about 2/3 or so the hole. I just want to keep as much stuff out of there as possible...........and it looks.......unfinished or something.
