    Happy Friday everyone!

Recently replaced my timing set, had oil pump woes etc…

    All clear now, well almost…

She is starting really hard, especially when warm.
I rebuilt my 2G (first time) and new plugs, points, wires, cap and rotor.
Set the timing and the mixture screws with a vacuum gauge and she runs like a champ!
Before all this, I couldn’t hit 2nd gear on the hill out of my neighborhood, now, no sweat! She’s looking for 3rd before the top.

Coming home from work yesterday, stopped for some refreshments and had a hard time getting started again.

Looking down the carb and working the throttle it seemed like a pretty weak little squirt of fuel. When I finally got her fired, she ran just like above.

Did I commit some kind of rookie error on my accelerator pump?

    Looking forward to your replies!

    Thanks
    Andy

Sounds more like a hot engine related fuel issue to me. Not specifically accelerator pump related. Fuel line routing maybe? Fuel boiling issue? Should be able to start without touching the throttle I would think.

Andy, don’t feel like your alone. Many a good man have “had a hard time getting started again” after they "stopped for some refreshments".

    Oh my!
I have been here a little over a year and tried to keep it clean for the sake of the education I am getting, but that made me cry (in the good way)!

What’s worse is that the truth hurts!

To your point @Glenn , nothing changed with fuel line routing. But to test I just fired up to 180, shut down and let her sit for ~10 minutes, fired up nicely with a little gas pedal feathering.

From your description letting the engine compartment cool off a bit seemed to help, right? Was the hood open or closed? When you previously drove it after you finally got it restarted, it seems the fuel flowing was enough to keep it running good? Basically it doesn't sound like an accelerator pump issue since it runs good.

It was not intended as not clean. Was as in stop to get a beer and it leads to another and another. Didn’t even think of it in the other way until I read yours.

    Thanks @Glenn ,
The hood stayed closed last night, also didn’t drive it, just stayed in the driveway and warmed up.
    Missing info from above;
I have the Idle set at ~8-850 rpm, set it at 700 initially, but it would stall at the stop sign.
Any other ideas for hard starting?
    Hotter plugs?

I don't have a V6 so am only throwing out basic thoughts, hopefully those familiar with a 2G will have ideas about this problem. Float level too low maybe? Have you tried setting the idle just by sound and not a vacuum gauge? Maybe the idle screws aren't open enough? Did you set the timing by a light? Is the idle supposed to be that high? Maybe a base gasket problem?

Well lets go back to the beginning. When you rebuild the 2g, how cruddy was it on the inside? Does the power valve piston slide up/down freely? Did your kit come with the acc pump for ethanol gas? How many check balls did you have in your carb? Should be 2. When going back together you need the small ball in the bottom of the accelerator pump well and the light spring fits down into the bottom groove of the well. May have to push it down with small screwdriver. This keeps that ball from jumping out of the hole. You should get two very healthy streams of gas from the pump action.

Do you have a fuel pump heat shield installed?

@Glenn, I started with a timing light, supposed to be 5* before, but ran terrible, took advice from this forum on a different thread about the vacuum gauge.
If I put a light on it now I would guess it would be 15-20* advanced.
Idle should be 650-700, I’ll have to check the manual to be sure.
@Walt Couch, Mike’s carbs advertised as ethanol ready. There was some mild corrosion on some of the brass parts and sediment in the bowl.
The check balls are in their correct places.
    @Cj5dale, no heat shield.

I noticed a “plateau” with the vacuum gauge, a few degrees with no change. I think I’ll retard the timing back to the beginning of that plateau and then check the mixture screws again before pulling the top of the carb again.

I’m the last person to take advice from in all this, but my cj5 dauntless v6 (mostly stock) used to do something similar. Seemed to be worse in the summer when things were hotter.

I bought a heat shield for @timsresort and wrapped the fuel lines, which for some reason ran across the top of the engine next to the driver’s side valve cover and down to the fuel pump.

I also had a ballast resistor connected in line with a coil that had an internal resistor.

After fixing those things, I noticed a significant improvement.

again, Im not the one to take advice from regarding these jeeps but that fixed my issue.

4F85E12B-4C49-4007-BBDE-8F73DD5CFBE7.jpeg Once again, it seems the biggest problem was between my ears

I made the slight adjustments mentioned above, no better or worse. For some reason, I decided to check the 4 carb mounting bolts…you guessed it, loose as a goose! Okay maybe not that loose, but not tight.
To test my theory, ran to put a few gallons of gas in, fired right back up.
Decided to load her up a bit with a run to the top of the hill. Shut down for a few…fired right back up!
I think I may be in business
