Can you post a picture from the side showing the way it sit's now? Showing how it's bolted on i.e. the mounting?

The body is still on the Jeep so it’s a little difficult getting side shots but here are a few. Please let me know if there’s a better angle you’re looking for and I’ll try to get it.

By the way, the oil pan is not at the severe angle the pics make it seem. It’s actually pretty level with the floor.
And here’s a pic of how the tcase is resting on the support member in the back.

Can you point to where you read this, with a link? This does not make a lot of sense to me without context. You should be fine if you put everything back like it was, and support the back of the engine so it does not droop when you remove everything aft of the engine.

You are planning to replace the throw out bearing and maybe clutch, yes? Your TSM should have a step-by-step for this.

I’ll see if I can find the reference. That’s one of the reasons I was asking because my TSM didn’t say anything about it. It was pretty straight forward in its description.

I agree, his pictures show it being pretty normal/stock position.

You should be fine with putting it back just as it is sitting. I was just wanting to see if there was something weird about the way it sits.

Yeah my plan is to replace throw out bearing and the clutch/pressure plate. And whatever else turns up after I can get a look at it.

You don't need a lot of equipment or technical know-how to do this. I have done it on my back in my driveway, with just my muscles and the factory scissors jack. The FSM tells you to leave the transmission and transfer case connected for removal, but you don't have to. You can leave them connected to the cross-member, or not. Whatever works best for you.

Lacking experience, I would follow the FSM instructions. You could modify the procedure next time, based on your experience. Many variations are possible, and reasonable.

Got the floorboards removed. Here’s what I’m seeing. The “wet” oil is from all the PB Blaster I started spraying on the bolts.

No need to measure the angles unless there is a driveline vibration issue or a U-Joint longevity issue. As was said, just put stuff back the way it came apart. Take lots of pictures so you know how it was before disassembly. I too am interested in where you saw that information.

Chances are good your transmission/transfercase mounts are shot. It's probably worth replacing them while you have things apart. Note the V6's of your vintage use an F-134 engine mount on the right frame rail in addition to the mount beneath the transmission.

It might be from the build thread for my '71. I measured the angle before pulling out the T-14 because I was replacing it with a T-18 4spd with a fabricated crossframe. I wanted the angle of the drivetrain to be the same after the swap.

    T-14:

T-18. Not exact but pretty darned close:

Many years ago I considered the slope of the engine and found that the intake manifold had a built in slope to it at 4 deg. Then I considered that it was designed that way to put the carb back to level for the fuel bowl needs. Make sure the Jeep is sitting level when you do this and everything will line up properly.

Fireball is correct. I ran across it in his build thread. Which is very informative by the way.

thanks again for everyone’s suggestions and insight.

It looks like you are missing the clutch fork return spring. Is there a spring hiding somewhere out of the picture? This is likely what caused the release bearing problem.

there is this spring attached to the clutch pedal

    upload_2022-5-17_12-25-2.jpeg

But no other spring that I can see (other than the one I took off of the brake pedal). Here’s a pic of that general area sitting in drivers seat looking down. Where should the spring be?

The missing spring holds the release bearing off of the clutch fingers. I'd be willing to bet that if you loosen up the clutch cable until you have freeplay in the fork..... (so you can pivot the fork and feel the release bearing touch the clutch fingers, then move backwards) from there install that missing return spring.... you wont have that screeching noise any more.
Doing this wont fix your worn out release bearing, but it may buy you some time to drive the jeep for a while. The release bearing does need replaced, but you need to iron out the freeplay before you replace it otherwise you will be doing this job over again relatively soon. You should be able to find a spring assortment at your FLAPS.

The spring attached to the clutch pedal is for holding it up all the way.
