Hello, I'm replacing the seals and bearings as needed on the front differential on my 74 cj5. Picked up a new pinion seal which isn't a match to the one removed, it has an additional bevel and it looks like the side with the spring on the seal faces the yoke, away from the oil side of the seal(?) Has anyone dealt with this? Cannot load a picture as I get a security message, but will try again. Thanks P.S. It's a Spicer 44895

The garter spring side of the seal always goes to the fluid side when installed.

Here's a picture. The left side is the one that was in there, right is new. It says it's for a Dana 30. Going to try a local parts store. I have the axle on the bench and figured why not check the bearings and replace he seals. Now I have to track down the pinion and inner axle seals. Thanks for the replies.

The new seal looks like a pinion seal.

The side facing up on the new one is the sprig side. There must be different seals for the 30.

    A 44895 is a Dana part - https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=8530816&jsn=272&jsn=272

It shows that it fits a Dana 44 axle. This should be the same as a Dana 30, but Dana may have a different part number for that part for some reason.

This always seems to fall on deaf ears... however, the BEST way to find parts for your Jeep is to get the Jeep factory parts manual and look up the Jeep factory part number for the part in question. For a '74 CJ, this book is less than $25 on CD-ROM from RockAuto, and about double that for paper. If you have an earlier Jeep, you can get the correct parts book as a reprint from Faxon Auto Literature. If I owned a '72 or '73 CJ, the '74-80 book would not be exactly the same but VASTLY better than the aftermarket listings, which are rife with errors.

Jeep used one part number for pinion seals '74-80, 998092. https://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?partnum=998092 Any of these would be fine, as well as the Dana part.

Pinion seal for a CJ Jeep front axle all the same from 1941 to 1986.
    This covers D25 D27 D30.
    Many companies make replacement seals.

Can’t go wrong with Spicer OEM but it looks to me like these old stock CR’s were actually better made.

Agreed, The Spicer was the cross reference to the new style , checked at the parts store yesterday. At first look, it looked like it should have been bevel side up which is why I questioned it.
