I just discovered the timing cover on the 225 in my 71 is not correct. It lacks the nipple for the bypass hose. (Image included) Unfortunately I do not have photos or recollection of how the P/O got around this. I acquired the Jeep from a friend who had it for a just a few months and got it to run and move, but I didn’t bother starting it before just tearing it down for a rebuild. I don’t know if he ever noticed any coolant leaks with it. My cover also lacks the extra bolts beside the water pump journals into the block. Who has experience with ATP and/or TA Performance covers for these engines, and what do I need to know about fitting them, which is the better piece? I have a new Melling oil pump, Flow Kooler water pump, and will be installing the DUI HEI distributor if that makes any difference to either one. Or if someone has a good used cover they would part with I may be interested in going that route as well.

You should be able to just tee the bypass into the heater suction line at the water pump.

I just installed the ATP/Greyworks cover, I posted the differences a short time ago.

You will want the TA performance distributor hold down, and one of my oil pan bolt holes didn’t line up correctly. Definitely tap and clean all of the threaded holes.
I still have my original cover, it’s in rough shape, but if you’re interested pm me for details.

Did you run into any issues with installing your distributor Andrew? I’ve read on other threads that some had issues with aftermarket covers, needing to shim the distributor for height. How did you fix the issue of the pan bolt not lining up? Just oblong the hole in the pan? Reading your linked post I’m not concerned with the oil pump cover bolt problem as I had to replace half of them anyhow for being broken off, and it seems the only difference in main seal is that it mounts from the outside. Should take the same seal as the original cover I would presume? Thanks for your reply. Really hoping I can get this dauntless running soon and get into the final half of this restoration.

    Hello Dirty Deeds,
This thread covers most of my problems with the replacement cover. Most of them were between my ears.

No shims for the distributor, and the oil pan hole should have been addressed as you said.
I’ve only run it about 2-3 hours since completion, but no leaks anywhere.
Maybe I’ll drive it to work tomorrow and have something different to report, we’ll see.
    Good luck!
    Andy

I have the TA Performance timing cover on my Dauntless, which was installed about 5 years ago. It fit perfectly, has an adjustable-pressure oil pump, and so far has worked great.

The only minor issue is that the original larger-sized oil filters can't be used with this timing cover, due to its slightly closer proximity to the lower radiator hose than the stock covers. This isn't a problem, as the readily available smaller oil filters for GM engines fit fine.
