    Lots of progress to report over the weekend. Man it feels so good to finally get all of this stuff out of storage and cleaned up and installed!

    Got the fenders on and mated to the grille. Tim I like your suggestion of letting them dry inside, but with a 2.5 year old tornado running loose there's 100% chance they would get Duplo thrown at them or dragged around the living room.

    Heater went in over the accelerator pedal up under the dash. Going to eventually CNC a plate to cover the heater box holes with some cut outs for the hoses and grommets to protect them. Will also probably mount the fuse panel there as well.

    Question - which is the in and which is the out? The water pump is the "out" that goes to the "in" of the heater, and the intake manifold is the "in" that gets the water that comes out of the heater right?

    Got the dash in. I went with rubber washers under the bolts - is this right? Lots of my referencne pics show stainless steel washers in there.

    I battled this ACC / OC Auto Carpets "made to fit" carpet. While it is going to work for me and my tolerances on this project, it is certainly NOT exactly drop in custom fit. UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_88b5.jpg
    I really don't know how I'm going to accurately do the cut out for the tool box lid. Or how I'm going to dress the edges so it doesn't fray.

    Also had a go at painting the Tux badges. Not really that pleased so far, I strayed well out side th elines, and then got lots of fiber in the enamel. Had to add a second coat, which is still drying. Will try to wipe the flat high top surface clean and see how that goes, and if not, I will soak these in acetone and start over.

    I'm dying to put the hood on, but without a windshield it would be pretty hard to fold it up I think. So it might stay on the sidelines for a while.

    The only hiccup is that right now I can't seem to find the bracket that mounts he steering column to the dash. I'm going to do a pretty substantial tool cleanup and parts re-inventory after work today so hopefully it turns up.

    Edit - Oh yeah the other thing I have to figure out is how to paint the stamped JEEP letters white - is it the same white as the wheels (slightly cream?) or pure white? Who has done this and has some advice?

    Need some help/guidance on where this parking brake handle mounts, and where the cable go through the firewall. I did not have this in my jeep so I don’t know where it goes and how to install it?

    I went out to the shop and took some pictures.

    First the '69:

    The handle mounts to the bottom of the dash with a large Phillips head screw. The nut on top (not shown) has a captured serrated lock washer. The far end is held in the cowl hole with a grommet. The lower hole is for the heater temperature control cable. The second cable in my picture is not original:
    [IMG]

    Under the hood. Note, I've replaced the parking brake cable on this Jeep and the routing below does not follow factory routing:
    [IMG]

    The '71 still has the original cable and I believe the routing along the fender is correct:
    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    It's routing is not correct around the brake and steering column but it does terminate in the proper location on the crossframe:

    This is great, I wonder if I should make a separate thread so it’s easier for others to find in the future?

    Got the second batch of chrome stuff back from the chrome shop in Sparks yesterday. Now I have a side mirror!

    Looking forward to putting in a few hours this afternoon and finishing the carpet install and starting the wiring. I may even put the hood on if I have time after a massive garage cleanup.

    Roy @Beach66Bum did you do anything here to treat these so the paint doesn’t chip off? I was thinking about painting some plastidip or spraying Bedliner on the tabs.

    Got the tailgate on, although with the paint and three coats of clear, it won’t fall all the way down so I’m going to need to sand down the hinge bars. 2096D3E8-8D9A-42AA-8226-FB589E69FF41.jpeg

    Thinking about putting bedliner on the tailgate surround tabs where they will rub on the tailgate.

    Got my heater hole plate made on the CNC this weekend. Then got it painted, dried, and attached with grommets in for the heater hoses and Painless fuse panel after work.

    And now that I’m onto wiring, time to think about where to put the Bluetooth motorcycle 12V sound system:

    I thought the tailgate hinges on a Tux were chrome too? Not so?

    I asked some of the experts and they said they have seen both on original vehicles. I bought a box of spare Tux parts earlier this year from a member and one set was chromed.

    Wish I knew why....? They're not hosted anywhere, I just upload them to the ECJ5 site.

    I had a minute to sneak out to the Jeep with a multimeter last night, and I think that the issue is with the turn signal. The Sparton guide I have says there should be 7 wires: (EDITED to match @Fireball's annotated pic below)

    PINK [RF] -- {#725 Blue}
    BROWN [Brake light switch]-- {#718 White}
    BLACK [Sparton Bulb] -- [???]
    YELLOW [LF] -- {#726 Light Blue}
    WHITE [Flasher L] -- {#752 Purple}
    ORANGE [RR] -- {#748 Green}
    BLUE [LR] -- {#749 Yellow}

    Here are the actual wires, and I don't see a Green wire or a Red - but I do see a Brown wire and a Pink wire....and the white wire was defintely connected to the flasher can by the PO. Anyone have any ideas?

    Also - Are the parking lamps supposed to stay illuminated when the headlights come on? It’s been about ten years since I regularly drove this Jeep and I never drove it at night and I don’t even remember if the lights worked!

    This is from my notes when I restored the Spartan in my '69.

    Colors of wires on the Spartan (and they match the colors of the original Jeep wiring harness)
    • Brown - Incoming from the brake light switch(s)
    • Orange - Right rear turn/brake lamp
    • Blue - Left rear turn/brake lamp
    • White - "L" terminal on Flasher
    • Yellow - Left front turn lamp
    • Black (from Spartan switch) - Right front turn lamp
    • Black (from Spartan indicator bulb) - "P" terminal on Flasher.
    • The flasher itself needs an ignition-on source to the "X" terminal
    • It is also wise to run a ground wire from the indicator bulb screw in the Spartan and ground it under the dash. That way you don't need to remove paint from the column for the Spartan to have a ground.
    You can see where I attached the ground wire on this post in my '69 build thread: Old Red Maintenance Thread
