16” Wheel Question

I have the original 16” wheels for my Jeep (‘72) but no tires on them. I’d like to do something like the pic attached. What size(s) 16” tire might this be so it doesn’t rub and is still easy enough to turn with no power steering?

 

I run 235/85/16 they rub a little at full lock hasn’t been an issue.

 

Interesting. The '74-80 parts book only shows a 4.5" wide 5-lug 16" wheel with a '40s Willys PN, LDB, likely export only. All the others for 5-lug are 15".

The '62-73 J-series parts book shows a long running 5-lug wheel for trucks that's 16" diam and 6" wide, PN 948960. Don't know if this was on the option list for 1972, but the dealership could have easily gotten them and they would have cleared the 11" drum brakes for '72. looks like Jeep dropped the 5-lug 16" wheels (other than the 4.5" export type) when they went to 6-lug for the larger vehicles. Again, the dealership could have easily ordered them by the PN, but I suspect they would not have fit over either the '74-up finned 11" drums or the subsequent disk brakes.

You can go to the TireRack site and screen for that size wheel and the type of tire you want. They will list the nominal rim width in the tire specs. Also, if the trire rubs on the frame a bit at lock, you can either ignore it or there is a stop on one of the knuckles that you can adjust.

 

16” ceased being the standard wheel on CJ’s in mid 1963.
Likely ceased being an option between 1964-1971.
The Willys pick ups used 16” till the end of production on 1965.
But willys PU truck wheels are not the same as gladiator wheels.
The 16” gladiator wheel has way more wheel inset.
So Gladiator wheels do not fit cj’s.

 

My rims came from an early cj they are the 4.5 wide ones no issues with the no bead bump down to about eight pounds pressure.
