Power Saginaw Hose Fittings

Anyone know exactly what year Saginaw changed from double flare nut hose fittings to the “o” ring style of fittings ?
Seems to me they got away from double flare nut fittings around the late 1970’s.
I’m working with a Jeep Saginaw 800 box with the flare nut fittings.
Trying to find correct length high pressure hoses that I can modify the tubing bends to fit my needs.

as for which pressure hose to use for inverted flare fittings, I went with a gates 364160. It has plenty of metal tubing on the box side so you can bend it to fit. The pump side was almost a perfect fit, although I recall having to bend it very slightly.

I’ve currently modified a NOS Saginaw hose.
I don’t recall it’s original application but it was likely for a 225 Fireball.

I had to straighten both tube ends and change the bends. I have to bend the Saginaw tubes 45* right up against the flare nut.
The modified hose seems to fit pretty well but perhaps it’s 1” too long.
Like to find a spare that will be easy to fit.
As you can see this is fitted to s flatfender frame.

 

Looks to me that the cutoff is between 1979 and 1980. ( for jeeps)
Upon further checking it looks like the hose I modified was for a 1970-1971 wagoner.
I’m still hoping to find a better shaped hose to start with.

I didn't bother with the mix and match when i did mine. I just got the right InvFlare->JIC adapters, and had the local hydraulic shop build me a couple of hoses. Just made sense.

 

After a couple hours research ……looks like the very first power steering hose begins in 1953.
But no hoses will fit the 5/8” by 11/16” double flare saginaw boxes till about 1963.
Looks like the 1963 /64 Cadillac hoses have very nearly the correct bends.
Need to find out the OAL of those hoses….
Also the 1972-1979 wagoner hoses look like a decent match.
Anyone know where to find info on OAL for hoses ?

 

You can find the hose lengths at RockAuto. For example, they list '63/'64 Deville @31" and the '72-'70 Wagoneer @ 26 3/8".

Ken, your picture looks kind of like a Dauntless so I am going to share what I did on my J/C 101 with the Dauntless.

I tried using some hoses that were routed above the crossmember and under the radiator but they got pinched when I test fitted the radiator.






I bought 2 high pressure hoses as seen here. The first picture shows the one for a 1975 cj5 with a 304. I believe the second one was for a 1976 CJ7 but, I cannot remember for sure on that one.


I ended up using the 91578 because it had the greatest amount of clearance to the underside of the grill, it is bent from the manufacture to the contour of the grill bottom.


It threads into the gear and goes directly out to the frame edge and then back under the shock mount and inside the fender. The tubing appears much closer to the bottom of the grill in this picture...that is because I didn't have it threaded into the gear when the picture was taken.


The factory end for the pump connection was way off from what was needed so I had a 90* end put on by the local NAPA store, that cost about $17.00 and took only a few minutes. If you do this be sure to clock the 90* end exactly where you want it before it gets crimped on.


The front brake line junction block bolt made a convenient place to attach a bracket to help hold it firmly in place. I did some very slight bending by hand here so that it wouldn't come into contact with the inside of the fender.


I had painted the line black so it didn't stand out so much. The system was flushed and filled with new fluid and all is working properly. I have about $40.00 total into it, the hydraulic shop didn't have a fitting that would clear the grill (too tall at the 90*) but if theirs would have worked it would have cost about $47.00 so I feel pretty good about how this came out.

Maybe this could work for you, or at least give you some ideas.
