I’m very close to starting up my jeep as I close in on the finish line for the restoration. I have the rigid line running from the gas tank where it hooks to a flexible line going to the fuel pump. The question I have is I have installed a in-line filter between the rigid line and the flexible line and I think I may have it too high on the fender for the gas to get to the pump. I thought I saw in this site something that said the filter needs to be higher than the gas tank. Look at the pictures and let me know if it will work like this.

Do you need an additional filter element? There should be a filter in the glass bowl on your fuel pump.

It should be okay, or the pump is no good! A "perfect" vacuum would lift gas more than fifteen feet.

I like having a transparent (observable) and serviceable filter in the line, often helps with diagnosis in the field. Like the time I filled up at the gas station, then stalled about twenty feet from the pump. I discovered about a quart of water in my gas. Being able to see that enabled me to drain it off, and get home.

Just curious if having the in-line filter between the pump and carb is better, worse, or no different.

What model Jeep/motor are we talking about here? As a general rule, fuel is gravity fed to the pump which pushes it up to the carb. A filter between the tank and pump is never a bad idea. This location may be problematic in a low-fuel condition. The brass screen in the pump is only a strainer. A ceramic filter mounted to the carburetor is your best last line of defense to keep small particles from blocking the needle from closing in its seat.

I agree with Scoutpilot. I like the Carter ceramic filters mounted at the carburetor. The ceramic filters are the best ever made, and can be cleaned with solvent.

This takes a little creativity with the hard line coming from the pump on the F-head engine. On my CJ5 I have a canister filter mounted to the back side of the riser for the rear floor, and a temporary inline filter in the line just before going into the carburetor. I have a NOS Carter filter I plan to replace that inline filter with once I bend a new line from the pump to carb.

Thanks for the information. I’ll prolly mount a different filter on the fender later but I’m going to give this a shot.

I would put a barbed hose fitting right on the fuel pump and use a length of hose (1 piece) to your inline filter and eliminate all that other stuff.
    That's what I would do.

It is a F134. I know there is a lot of fittings and hose but that’s what I came up with to make it all work. I’ll clean it up a little when I get a more permanent set up.

I just cut the standard vibration line (that goes from the hard to the pump) in half and spliced in a disposable filter.

Having the filter above the fuel level helps keep it from leaking the tank dry when the hose or clamps fail. On my 134 I had the disposable filter before the carburetor to catch any crud from the lines or pump before it clogs the needle and seat.

I took the top off my fuel pump and turned in line with the frame, with the intake at the rear, and outlet to the front, make it easier to meke gas lines. Just saying. Rick
