Dana 70 Bearing Install

I'm rebuilding the rear axle in my Dodge pickup.
While contemplating pressing the new bearings on the pinion and carrier I thought about using heat to make it easier.

I can put the pinion and carrier in the freezer overnight and heat the bearings in the oven. From what I've found on line 200 deg F is a safe temp for tapered roller bearings.

Has anyone done this before? Can anyone think of a reason not to?

I wonder if the temperature shock during installation would be bad for the bearings or pinion and carrier.

 

I worked for a General Contractor and we did a remodel at a business that sold heavy equipment. Hung out in the shop a lot. On the big hoe ram hammers. When rebuilding those hammers they would put pins in nitrogen for a few minutes. Let them get real cold and slip them in.

I used my shop press to install the pinion bearing at shop temperature, it went fine.
I was worried about having something to press against, I used the old bearings inner race and a 2" pipe nipple.

I'll try the same thing on the carrier bearings, if they fight I'll pull them off and try the heat.
