Is there not a grease seal in the bell to keep grease from migrating down the axle tube? Or is it just the inner seal to keep 90w out of the tube and bell? Have the front axle out and was inspecting it hoping for a quick diff fluid change clean up and repaint and found the diff housing full of grease.

There was no outer seal when I pulled the axle shaft and I'm not seeing one in the parts diagrams. So I'm guessing at this point the inner seal failed and grease migrated overtime into the diff housing.

    Thanks for any direction,
    Josh

It is usually just the opposite. The diff lube ends up in the knuckles and from there, into the brakes.

I'm sure there was some diff oil in the tube/knuckle but didn't see any in the brake drum. Looks like one of the previous owners rebuilt the brakes and did the bearings and seal on the hub at the same time but didn't go further than that.

If you are going to replace the wiper seals on the balls, it is a good time to inspect the upper and lower king pin bearings. The uppers are usually lube starved and get dry.

Kingpin bearings look brand new, very good condition and Timken brand. I'll be reusing them.

Forgot to post on here that the inner seal was actually just not there at all.
