    I have Jeep CJ-5 with t-176 and Dana 300.

    The Dana 300 has two shifting rods, with a metal bridge connecting them that the shifter fits into.

    When I looked at the transfer case shifter and had my son move it, the only rod that moves is the passenger side rod. The inside rod (driver side) does not move at all.

    Is this normal? Should both rods move in unison?

    The metal bridge slides at an angel when the shifter is moved. All the pins are in place on the metal bridge.

    Any suggestions as always will be most appreciated.

    Thanks

    They both have to move to get the full capabilities of the Tcase. The passener side rod controls the front output and the driver's side controls the rear output. Each shift rod has three positions, full extended engages the high range, fully retracted engages low and in between is neutral. I am guessing your only going from 2H to 4H. HTH

    Anything I can do to fix this?

    Can I tap it in with a small hammer?

    Thanks,
    Paul G.

    I wouldn't use a hammer on it just yet. My 300 has been converted over to twin stick, but as I remember the 'bridge' you mention slides into a guide which, along with the internal interlock pins keep you from getting it in a high/low mismatch.

    If you're seeing the passenger shift rod go from even with the driver's side then back about 3/4", you're going from 4H to 2H, the next movement of the shifter would be to move the driver's side shift rod back even with the passenger rod. This would be forward movement of the shifter and rearward movement of the shift rod. The Tcase would then be in neutral.

    To be able to shift these helical cut gears need to be able to move during the engagement process. When I was working on mine out of the Jeep I turned the yokes by hand while shifting. After it was in the Jeep I rolled the Jeep slowly to assist the process. You should be able to put the transmission in neutral and get the Tcase to go to neutral.

    If shift rod doesn't budge at all then it may be stuck due to corrosion or other issues, such as internal damage to the Tcase. If the rod moves a little bit 1/8 -1/4" then the shift fork may be bound up. Either way the shifter should provide sufficient leverage to work the rods. Of course I don't know how big your son is. :)

    It may be that only 2H and 4H have been used for so long that the shift rod is rusted on the outside (or inside) so that is all it will do. If you haven't already done so it might be good to change the fluids and see if that gives any indication of internal condition. Easy to pull the cover then if you want to look inside.

    HTH,
    Norm

    When I installed a twin-stick on my 1985 CJ7's DANA-300, the following was the resulting shift actiion:

    Drivers side stick:
    Back = high range
    Center = neutral
    Forward = low range

    Passenger side stick:
    Back = 4wheel high
    Center = 2wheel high
    Forward = 4wheel low

    Also, I can NOT shift the sticks improperly. I can't shift into 4wheel low, unless I'm also in low range; and vice-versa.

    BTW...I love my twin-stick setup and would recommend this (relatively low cost) add-on to anyone with a D-300.
