MsBoyink and I were out perambulating in Springfield Saturday afternoon when we came across a little sculpture garden. She said she'd like something for out in front of the house. I made a small comment about not being able to do too much without a welder.

    "Well, look into welders then."

I last had a 110V wirefeed Lincoln setup for MIG. I liked it, but am wondering if anyone has experience with some of the less expensive rigs I see out there these days?

Here's the kind of thing I made in the past:

My neighbor gave me a Century 110v stick welder that is about as useful as a paperweight. I keep it in the RV for emergencies, but I’d have to be pretty desperate to use it. On the flip side, the Esab 110v stick welder we had had the one shop I worked at was the cat’s meow.

My point being, you got the OK from the boss, don’t go cheap if you don’t have to. ;)

I have a Hobart 140 mig running .030 flux core. i love that welder. easily my most used welder, and i have 220v, 3 phase, and 480v welders. its just so handy. welds up to 3/16'' no problem with 1 pass, 1/4'' with 2 normal speed passes or 1 slow pass, and up to 1/2'' if i pre heat it with a torch. the only thing i don't like is the metal has to be pretty clean or the weld wont stick until its built up enough heat to burn the surface contaminates off.

I have a Hobart 220 that I roll out when I need to do a jeep project or weld thicker metal. But I also have a small 110 harbor freight “titanium” wire feed that was about $150. I leave that one plugged in under my workbench and use it nearly every day for random welding projects.

Kinda like the look and price point of the Titanium (although it is $209 now). Not sure I really need MIG for what I want to do, and not having the extra hassle/expense of the bottle would be nice.

Use flux core wire instead of gas. The welds are not as pretty but it does work. Sound like for what you want to do it would be fine.
