Alright! Time to update this thread!

So I took a vacation to Wyoming in June for the GF's kinda semi annual family reunion (the last one was 5 yrs ago in CO when I blew this thing up). We followed that up by stopping at our local PNW Trail Jamboree on our way home with the M38 in tow in early July. Now, the previous really has nothing to do with the story I'm about to tell except to set a timeline. When I arrived home after being gone for about 2 weeks and go to work on Monday to check my e-mail, I found a very intriguing email in my personal inbox from the Friday before. It was from a gentleman that I had exchanged e-mails with back in 2013 when I first drug this Jeep home, and the information and pdf's of manuals that he provided me then were instrumental in getting this thing to run in the first place. Fast forward to July 2021 and he has retired, is overwhelmed with Jeep projects, and looking to unload a few he's not going to get to in case something happens to him and his wife doesn't have to deal with it all. He was just starting to shop things around when he discovered my post on E-Willys from back in 2016 that I was looking for a replacement Perkins engine. This is obviously where the intriguing e-mail fits into the story, as he was looking to sell his complete Perkins drivetrain that he has had sitting in a CJ5 chassis in his shop. Complete from radiator to t-case and he kept the CJ5 chassis for what I thought was a very reasonable price for a confirmed running Perkins, originally from a 64 CJ-6. I immediately sent him back a message that I wanted it and gave him my phone number. And then I waited 2 excruciatingly long days for a response when my phone rang around lunch time Wednesday. It was him! And he still had the engine! And it's in CA! But I'm in WA! This all worked out actually perfectly as we already had plans to run the Rubicon in early August and he was about 2 hrs south of where we left the trucks in South Lake Tahoe for the week.
We ran the trail without issue with the Jeeps, got off trail Friday morning and fixed the bearing on my trailer that I smoked on the way down, and hit the road to his house Saturday morning. We got there around 9, and the drivetrain was still sitting in the 5 chassis with the body on, but a friend of his feverishly working away at getting it unbolted. The owner had screwed up his knee the week before and was hobbling about so no real issue there with it not being ready to go. We helped lift the body off, unbolt and lift it out of the chassis and onto the front of my trailer for the trip home. I put the M38 on the trailer backwards for the trip back to WA to distribute the weight better on the trailer. A diesel engine, transmission and t-case right on the front of the trailer adds some significant tongue weight! It was an interesting trip home from there.... On I-5, somewhere in the Siskiyous past Lake Shasta but before Weed, I felt a weird hiccup in the steering wheel of my 97 F350 going around a corner. The next corner revealed that I had just lost all power steering. I muscled it up to the next exit where the short off ramp and very small exit forced me to pull back onto the on ramp to make room for my travel group. Up on coming to a stop on the on ramp, the brake pedal was rock hard as well. Had I thrown the serpentine belt? No, my battery light would be on if that were the case. So I pop the hood to find the pressure line has blown out of the fitting in the side of the pump. That's problem one. Was the brake pedal just a fluke? The vacuum pump that make vacuum for the booster is right above the power steering pump...Anyways, problem one needs a solution first and foremost. Can't drive down the road turning the pump with no fluid for 30 miles so there's gotta be a roadside solution. I was bale to tap the line back into the swivel fitting and then carefully crimp it to an oval shape to grab whan was left of the flare, without causing a leak. Topped off with trail fluids from the jeep and a test fire revealed power steering again with no leaks. had to get back on the road to see about the brakes... First pump had brakes, second pump had none. This worked until it didn't. By Weed I had nothing again except 3 trailer brakes and all of my might to stand on the pedal while pulling on the wheel. I knew the offramp into Weed was short and downhill. No go. Limped into Yreka very carefully where the local O-reillys had a vacuum pump on the shelf that I could change in the parking lot. Getting that change out is a story all by itself, but it involves a 10mm wrench or socket, only one of which I could find, and that broke on #2 of 3 bolts.

Now.... The fun part of the post. This past weekend I had nothing really going on and the Jeep was on the trailer to haul to the shop at work. I had originally planned to do this over labor day weekend, but I couldn't stand it any longer! On Saturday I hauled it into work where I had a nice flat concrete surface to work on, and started swapping it. It's not running yet, but I picked away at a few more things sunday morning back at home. I'm at a standstill until new motor mounts get here, but they should be here this week. Hoping to have it all put back together and driving by next weekend.

Mitch, glad to see you are making progress. Haven’t had much time to work in mine, but hope to get some done over the holiday weekend!

So, motor is in, everything hooked up externally, front clip bolted back on. I spent a few hours dicking around with it yesterday. Turned the key and it fired up and ran for about 5 seconds, then died. I've gone through all the normal bleeding procedures, cleaned injectors, etc. I've gotta have a line loose or damaged that's sucking air. I'll find it, but dang it's a PIA.

It never fails Mitch. Even the simplest things go wrong. Especially if your luck is like mine! But I know you will get her going. Hopefully something simple.

Right now I'm suspecting the line that runs from the fuel pump on the right side of the block, around the back of the head, and into the filter housing on the left side.... Will check that after work and hopefully it's the culprit.

With a bunch more cranking, a bunch more fuel bleeding, swapping some parts, and crossing my fingers along with all my thoughts and prayers, she finally fired up and ran to the point I had to shut it off to kill it instead of it just petering out on its own last night. Sounds good, 40 psi oil pressure at idle, and holds steady temp at 180*. Crossing my fingers it holds the fuel prime when I go to fire it up again tonite. Assuming it does, I either need to swap the T-case out next or repair the one that is in it. Nothing mechanical there, but the ear for the torque whatever you want to call it on the right side is broken off the front shift housing.

Question- Can I just swap that front housing out, or does it change the bearing pre-load with a different housing?

Then I should probably replace the wheel cylinders. Looks like the LR is leaking potentially and with the single res master, I'm not taking any chances with leaky wheel cylinders.

It held prime and fired right back up last night.

    Regarding the transfercase tab...
Might as well disassemble one than both and still have the other for later.

Still making occasional progress with this thing. I changed fuel filters and "crud bowl" gaskets the weekend before last and swapped the vented cold start res to a sealed unit. Lots more cranking and fighting with it to get it to start and run..... but, I fired it back up again this Saturday and although it was 45* out and it still took some cranking to fire, it took alot less cranking than it had previously. So we're making progress. Still pretty smoky. Thinking about pulling the injectors and pump and sending them off for a refresh.

Here's where I'm at with this thing. Still runs kinda like a turd and it's hard to start cold still. Hoping some drive time will make that a little better, but not holding my breath. As far as drive time, I made alot of progress fixing the little things that were hanging me up this labor day weekend and got the floor pans back in it and drove it to lunch yesterday and work today. She's smoky, and I still think I have some fuel system issues to sort out, but it runs and drives. Welded up the broken ear off the transfer case. Thought alot about it, overthought it some more, and just welded it and crossing my fingers. lol. New HD skid plate from Brennan Metcalf bolted right on. Only difference I see is the cutout for driveshaft clearance isn't on the HD ones. Time will tell if it's an issue. Also got the mechanical tach adapter fitted up to the back of the motor. All new HD motor mounts in from Big willy Jeep, and a new transmission mount since the old one was in 2 pieces. Gonna keep tinkering but it's back on the road for now. :)

I also welded up a bunch of existing cracks in the floor boards and floor pans before I put things back together. This thing is in better shape than it's ever been since I've had it, just gotta get the "new" motor dialed in as well as it can be.

Still driving it. There's definitely some crud accumulating in the sediment bowl. Been dumping lots of additives and cleaners into the thing. It's improved a bit since I've been driving it, but it's still not where it should be. Next step may be removing pump and injectors and sending off for a rebuild. Happier with the overall "coming together" of new parts on this thing this time over the original "get it back on the road" build.

I finally managed to score an older Warn 8200 winch last night. This is the "tweener" winch that was between the Belleview/Warn with the band brake and one way motor, and the 8274. It uses the Belleview case, but has a 2 way motor and ratchet brake like the 8274. The classic looks, with 8274 upgrades. This will find it's way onto the CJ-6 once I go through it and get it functional. I had already planned on swapping to an 8274, but then this popped up.

Pics. It's kind of a mess right now, but the motor looked better inside than what I was expecting honestly. It will need a new engagement lever and obviously alot of cleanup. Toying with making the necessary bushings and spacers to put a new style motor on it.

Took a trip into town to meet up for lunch with my buddy Shawn and his intermediate CJ-6 survivor named Baloo a couple weekends ago.
