My brother has a brand new OA setup that has been in his garage for years. I have a spare set of bottles in my shed for about the same amount of time. He was heading to the airport and didn't think they would be a nice thing to have in the back of his truck the other day.

I sat in the Jeep making vroom vroom noises yesterday and I have the wing span of a Pterodactyl. I think I could get away with bending it, but would like to pick up another one or better yet find one already bent.

Are these "canes" pretty specific to the tranny?

    Yup.
Probably find a complete used top in good shape and not have to mess with disassembling one to change out the cane.

I think I've seen the big jog in a Jeepster T-14 shifter stalk.

Not only are the canes specific to the transmission, they are specific to the application. My '74-80 book shows two different canes for the T-14, and five different canes for the T-15. The last year for the T-14 in any Jeep was 1975, so I'm sure there are plenty more variants from earlier apps.

    BTW - to Jeep, it's not a stalk or a cane, it's a lever.

Getting ready for the first bend...We used a metal spacer so the lever wouldn't move and wet towels. I slipped a pipe over the lever for the leverage needed to bend it.

2nd bend after the first bend cooled to the touch.

Exactly what I wanted...Thanks guys for the tips! Felt great on the drive home.

A tight shift boot is important if your Jeep doesn't have a top, or you hose out the interior. Water runs down the cane (lever) and gets in the transmission oil. I've pulled more than a few apart that have been full of water.

Yep, that is the Mr. Gasket #1651 (says so in the description).

Thank you. I've heard it mentioned here often but never seen one installed in someone's Jeep. And to be honest their
default product image makes you think it is an undersized, lopsided shifter boot... :worry:

Maybe to mitigate any damage, a zip tie could be cinched tight around the opening where the shift lever pokes through?
That might stop the lever chafing the rubber and letting the "accordion" do the work.
